Audio/Navagation

I just bought a 06 4runner sport and I want to do a little upgrading to the audio system.


Does anybody know if there is a unit out there that kind of does it all... I guess what I'm looking for is an in dash touchscreen unit that does audio, dvd's, sirius radio, navagation all in one??

I recently purchased a 2006 SR5 with the basic stereo system. I upgraded to the Pioneer Avic-D3 navigation system.

Based on the features it has and the amount to purchase, I believe that it is a solid value. It has a 6.1" touch screen and plays cds, mp3s, dvds, AM/FM and has Sirius or XM radio capabilities. I purchased the optional Ipod and Bluetooth adapter. The one drawback I have read about is the fact that it only has one CD slot. However, this is irrelevant if you have an Ipod.

I have read many opinions/reviews about the various navigation units that combine all the features. Many people favor the Kenwood, while others favor the Eclipse. I chose Pioneer based on the features and the amount I was willing to spend on a unit.

The Eclipse 6620. I just put one in my 4Runner and it is excellent.

Keep in mind that Eclipse navigation units are made by the same manufacturer that makes the Toyota navigation units, so things like your steering wheel controls will plug right into the unit and work perfectly.
 
I just put in a Kenwood Dnx7100 in my 08 sport and it is awesome. I also have my nano hooked up with 2k songs. The navigation is garmin and is top notch.
 
I'm really leaning towards the Eclipse. It seems like the best unit I have seen so far.

What are you guys paying for the 6620??

How easy is it to install? I can install just about anything technical things don't scare me but I don't have time to piss around for 6hrs on it.

If it's straight forward I'll do it myself but if it's complex I might just have the stereo shop do it.

I will also be wanting to keep my steering wheel controls functional.

I am not sure how much that unit is but I do know that mine installed was 1500 with a backup camera (tax included). Ok just found out the 6610 at circuitcity is 1549 + tax and installation. One big difference is that fact that the eclipse models are dvd navigation based and the kenwood is harddrive based. You have to leave in the dvd for the eclipse. I do however like how the eclipse interface is basically the same as the factory unit.

You can find the 6620 discounted for about $900, but the manufacturers warranty will not apply. Cartronixplus.com has it for that price, and they include a one-year warranty since the manufacture does not warranty their units when purchased from a non-authorized dealer. If the warranty is important to you, then you can get it from Crutchfield for a few hundred dollars more.

The installation is fairly straight forward. If you can disassemble your center console, lower driver's side dash, center stack, and remove your head unit, then you can install this system. With the wiring harness, it is mostly a plug-n-play deal, and you only need to tap into two wires to connect to the unit (reverse and speed sensor signals). Also, if you ground the parking brake wire, you'll have full control of all functions at all times, even while driving.

That's true, but realize that the Eclipse has a slot just for the mapping DVD, so there's no reason to ever take it out. There is another slot for for audio CDs or movie DVDs above the mapping DVD drive.

Yeah true. But there are a couple things to consider:

Check the resolution of the display on the Alpine compared to other HUs. I believe it has the highest resolution of any 7" HU out there (WVGA, most likely 800x480 resolution like the previous Alpine IVA-D900/D901) . Most everything is built in when you have the BlackBird; Navi, Bluetooth (for both cell speaker phone and music streaming), FM RDS traffic, iPod control (both video and audio), CD/DVD (slot open not taken up by navi disc). About the only options are HD Radio, SAT radio, and TV Tuner. Plus, if you ever go on vacation and decide to rent a car, you can pull the BlackBird out and take your navi with you.

Pioneer AVIC-Z2: , 336,960 Pixels - 1,440 x 234

I'm thinking about purchasing the Pioneer AVIC-D3 but once installed with the volume and radio controls on the steering wheel continue to work with this unit? Don't mind hitting the touchscreen but would be nice if I could use the steering wheel.

They are having a $200 rebate on these units which brings it down to $800. Super deal.

I looked at an Apine tonight I forget the model# but I don'think it was the latest and greatest.

It had a 6.5" screen and it seems that I can get 7" from other brands and it only held one disc. 2 seems necessary to me.

But the nice thing about it was that black bird navagation that you can take out and use in another car.

That is a really nice feature.

I still think I like the eclipse
