Audio quality on the 2022 ORP?

What IS it with this new generation that doesn't seem to care about sound quality of music like I did when I was their age?? I guess all the Spotify has dumbed down expectations.

Guess I'll just have to wait and see how it sounds, and go from there.

Don't forget most people primarily listen to music through crappy earbuds so that has become the standard for sound quality. I like to listen to my records through a good set of over-ear headphones every once in a while to remind myself what music can sound like. :drummer:

In a perfect world we'd have a 10M count CD library in our vehicles. You definitely improve sound quality with good sources like uncompressed files, but the second you push them over BlueTooth, quality is degraded rather significantly. You can run through aux cable, but then you the convenience of the head unit and steering controls.

Most folks aren't going to notice on a big sound change running uncompressed files through an aux cable compared to just using a premium HIFI streaming service like Tidal.

We have a Sony stereo in our '99 4R and it sounds decent to me, even using an old iPod Classic. That's all I'm really after, decent

I'm not an audiophile, but I can firmly say the 2020+ TRD ORP stereo is one of the worst sounding late model stereos I've heard and I rent tons of cars and trucks for work.

For my wife's 2020 TRD ORP, I upgraded all the speakers with the plug and play kit from OEM Audio Plus. It's quite a bit better and acceptable now. The stock speakers I pulled from the 4Runner were equal to what my 1986 Accord came with. The 2020 4Runner head unit is pretty good seems to have decent power to run the aftermarket speakers without an amp. An amp would certainly help give more depth and clarity but for my wife, it's fine as is.

Also upgraded to the single sub, double amp, OEM Audio system. I don't regret the decision (some minor PTSD from the wiring harness install though!) - significant improvement in quality, bass, etc.

1977 Datsun pickup checking in. 2 Jensen coax speakers and a sanyo tape deck that would *gasp* play the other side of the tape just by hitting a button. Also had "pre dolby" tape hiss reduction

agree but i am a DIY-er who grabs uncompressed (FLAC) recordings and stream it from my Plex server at my house which means I can select the transcode quality when on the road. as you can see, the music below is playing uncompressed but the weak link is pushing this to my head unit via bluetooth which degrades the quality.

a good head unit with android apps built in would eliminate that weak link and i've found setting my remote/streaming to 320bps provides excellent quality without having to push it out uncompressed.

I almost wrote out the same thing. A CD is what, 128bit audio? A regular 192bit mp3 contains more audio spectrum than that 128bit CD, there's even 256 and higher mp3s, and then there FLAC as you mentioned, ogg files, etc.


There's WAY better audio option than a CD.

I had the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Past" on 8-track, and to minimize the breaks in the midst of songs they rearranged the order of several of the tracks lol kind of defeated all the planning that went into the album!

Finally took delivery on our ORP a couple weeks ago. I agree, the stock stereo isn't the greatest if you turn it up much, bass is very boomy and uncontrolled. Time will tell.

I don't think it sounds too bad with Spotify if you put the audio quality settings the highest they offer and scoop out the EQ on the 4Runner a bit to taste. I've never had XM/Sirius radio before and it sounds like crap on their end though.

First and foremost: I think the most noticeable difference was turning the automatic sound leveling option up to "high." Default I believe it was "medium."

Audio apps I use: Spotify (main), Apple Music, Sirius (only for the free trial). Primarily bluetooth but also some wired apple carplay (until I get a wireless dongle), not sure if I hear a drastic difference with either.

Music preferences: primarily rap and edm + a bit of everything else

For Spotify, I set the equalizer to R&B and the audio quality of streaming and download to "high" (I have unlimited data, YMMV).

For the 4Runner sound settings, I have:
- Treble +2
- Mid +1
- Bass -2
- +2 fade to the front (no change left and right)


My thought process is to have the bulk of the quality come from the device itself and then fine tune, if you will, on the stereo settings. This sounds good to me, bass is still existent and full but not completely overpowering and you can still hear lyrics/vocals on folk or rock without it being muffled out.

Pro tip: don’t even try to adjust your EQ for XM unless it gives you a separate setting for each input.

XM is very “fizzy” (in a bad way, due to high compression, not unprecedented clarity like when CD’s first came out)

On a side note, its because we listened to vinyl, had amplifiers, equlaizers etc and didnt chop music into MP3's.
Listen to Tidal app, with plugged in headphones, and hear the difference.
We listened to as close to raw music as possible. Not perfect master cuts.

As far as I know, JBL is standard on all Ltds and Pros do. Not possible to add to any other trims.
