Audio system display brightness

Is there anyway to adjust the brightness of the display without the headlights on??

I find the orange of the display brutally bright when the headlights aren't on. Ok on a bright sunny day, but sitting in the truck in a dark area and its brutal..

In my acura you used to be able to turn the display off by holding a particular button combo for a few seconds. anything like that in the 4runner?

I think you can. It is part of the custom settings done by the dealership. I could be wrong though. Every time I read the doc. I get confused and don't understand what the changes are.

I am going this weekend to get some settings changed, I can report back.

I don't know what it's like in the US, but up in Canada we have a three mode switch for headlights. The bottom is like an "o", it has the display and gauges at full brightness, and the orange front lights on. Up from there is running lights... you still only have the orange front lights on, but the gauges dim, and I believe the rear tail lights come on. One more is headlights, it is the same as the middle position switch but with the front headlights.

Again I don't know what the US 4Runners are like, but if the gauge was a problem to me, I would just turn the switch to the middle position.

Ya, usually I'm sitting in my truck with the engine off, so turning on the lights isnt a great option because of the battery life. It would be great if it was programmable by the dealer, but even better if there was just a way to turn it off when needed

Does the instrument cluster dimmer do it?

Like Canadian144 said, only when the lights are on.
Have you tried duct tape:D
Maybe if you used a piece of window tint it wouldn't look too ghetto.
I thought most people felt the opposite, the display is too hard to read in the daytime.

I discovered yesterday that you can dim the information screen at the top of the console (that shows distance to empty/average mpg, time, and temperature) by pressing and holding the button on the left. But I don't think that is your main concern here haha
