Audio upgrade for 2006 Sport (4th Gen)

Really liking my new-to-me '06 4R Sport....except for the audio. Looking for suggestions to improve and expand the audio a bit. Here's what I am after:

--- Better speakers, but I don't need higher end and don't need a subwoofer.

---Sirius, if possible, unless it simply becomes riculously expensive to acquire the hardware and have it installed.

---MP3 player capability, again if possible and it makes sense.

---Single CD player is fine and I'm beginning to think preferable as I'm not real fond of my stock 6-cd changer.

So, what am I in for here? I do have reasonable skills that might allow me to knock out a simple to moderate install, depending on components, etc. Do I stick with the stock stereo and add the Sirius hardware, an amplifier, and front/rear speakers? Do I scrap the stock stereo and get something else (preferably the doesn't require an external amp)? If so, please offer recommendations. Also, what online resources are available (besides Crutchfield) to research car audio products and advice?

Please feel free to offer anything that might help me work towards a solution. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty much in the same situation as you except I have a 2006 SR5 model. I'd like better quality sound and SAT Radio.

here is my head unit (JVC kw-nx7000 head unit) installed in my 06 sport. this thing is amazing.

navigation, SD card, Sirius, iPod support, dvd player, touch screen and a lot of amazingly well thought out features.

highly recommend it.

Nice...and it has navi and all that?....how much did you pay for it... In the near future I am going to upgrade my current touch screen Boss HU I am gonna put it on my old Plymouth breeze which still runs great but I want to make sure to get a detachable unit for my 4runner even tho' I have my windows tint I like to pull them off to avoid the damn thieves.. What model is your JVC?
 
I've done a little research and it looks like a double-sized HU might be the way to go to maintain a more natural appearance. I figure that for about $600 I can get a decent HU, Sirius receiver, good front/rear speakers, and a unit that allows for the steering wheel features to operate. Installation would be extra, but I'm thinking that I might be able to do this myself. Anyone have experience with replacing HU's in the 4th gen T4R? How did it go?

it's the kw-nx7000.

I got it on ebay for a little over 600 shipped... very good deal. :)

Nope, there is a JVC adapter you can buy... that was a deal breaker for me on a few of the other ones I was considering.

Cool. Is there also an adapter or something for my rear entertainment center?
 
there is an available a/v input, but im not sure what it supports to be honest.

i was under the impression it would at least support a backup cam.

no, not yet, I really want it, but have other things to get done, and now Christmas is close and birthdays, lol but I will get it, :dancin:
