Auto tranny hesitation

As some of you know, I'm new here and just got an 01 LTD. In 14 years driving, I have never owned an automatic transmission.

My 01 has 138k miles on it. When starting in drive or reverse, I'll step on the gas and it takes a moment (anywhere from half a second to a second) for the tranny to engage and make the car move. Is this normal for an automatic transmission?

Not really - it should respond and want to move immediately when you switch gears (ie reverse from park - drive from reverse)

Did you look at your transmission fluid?

Sorta sounds more like throttle response than transmission to me :shrug: but what do I know.

Yeah fluid is good.

I got it with a poweraid throttle body spacer on it. Sounds like the exhaust was opened up as well. Looks like a stock tail pipe though. Think that has anything to do with it?

I thought it was tranny related b/c when I step on the gas, it revs like it's in neutral and then jerks forward once the gear catches.

Clean the throttle body, mine was dirty, and i got smoother acceleration.
 
Sounds like a sensor...however I can not remember which one. Hopefully someone else will chime in or you can use the "search" feature.
Just remembered "speed sensor"

In this situation, cleaning your TB isn't going to fix anything.

sorry for double responding but I didn't catch that the first time, and that DOES indeed sound tranny-ish to me :(
 
ok so you put it in drive. you release the brake and rev the engine. for a moment you dont move, then the it jearks and you start moving.
am i right?

if so your clutch packs may be worn out or the valve body may be dammaged. either way you are most likely looking at a transmission rebuild

Yes...Sometimes it engages normally, sometimes it takes a moment and i get the jerk.

Crap...Maybe I'll keep the powertrain warranty that I purchased. Now if I can get the tranny to completely go before 2 years/24,000 miles.

I imagine I could take it to an ATRA Specialist, could they just do a little inspection and assess the overall condition of the tranny? How much would something like this cost?

i have no idea. i was just suggesting to take it to advance or autozone and have them check the codes.
