Auto tranny life expectancy?

Just curious what type of miles one can get out of the auto tranny's in the 3rd gen 4runners?

Mine is about to hit 167k and I have owned it since 163k. I got it from a Toyota dealer and do not have any service history on it. I do know that the PO changed out the T-belt at 95k, but thats it. It was a one owner too. I did a drain and refill when I bought it and the fluid was pretty clean and still had that sweet smell too it. I did another drain and fill about 500 miles ago.

I bypassed the radiator and installed a Hayden tranny cooler just because, no indication of the pink milkshake and the radiator appears original.

At times it seems to shift a little hard, but I had a reputable tranny shop drive it and he said it felt fine and described the shifts as "firm" which is okay.

I have over 200K miles on mine and it's great still. The auto trannies in these trucks are actually very well-built trannies. I wouldn't be surprised if mine makes it to 300K+.

NICE! Those are words I like to hear. The 2001 I'm getting has about 120,000 miles, and to get another 120K on top of that would be awesome.
 
I have 116,000 on my 2000 limited and the trans is smooth shifting under lighter acceleration buy under harder throttle has a harder/solid shift that can be taken as kind of a hard shift. My Toyota tranny tech friends tell me that this is just how if should be shifting. There one tip: If it has not gotten regular trans flushes then just do drain & fills.
 
You guys with hard shifts could try loosening the kickdown cable on the throttle body a little. If the cable is adjusted to tight it will make it shift hard and fast.
 
I have 256,000 miles on mine and it works beautifully. I change the filter and oil every 30k miles. I rarely tow anything, but most of my driving is in stop and go here in southern calif. I just recently did a complete oil and filter change and added an inline trans filter {Magnefine]. I am hoping to get about 400,000 miles out of it.:trophy:
 
I sell toyota parts, and I dont commonly get asked for a transmission for the 96-02. Now the Auto in the 90-95 isnt as solid for some reason, or the age has caught up, as I sell those more often.

Manual transmissions are so much simpler than automatics. With the exception of clutch wear (which is really a maintenance item), a manual transmission should basically last forever if it isn't abused.

Half a million miles on a manual is not unheard of...
 
We have had two 3rd gen 4runners and taken them both to 250k miles with no issues from the trans. We did change the fluid on both 3 times. No issues!
 
change your fluid on it and it will probably last a very long time. Fluid is cheap, mechanical parts are not.

Mine has 209k and it was a victim of a pink milk shake. Still works great and has zero issues.
 
Our 96 had 230,000 on it when it got totaled. I'm preping to put that engine and trans into a 97 that needs both engine and trans. I've done at least 6 drain and fills on it with a Magnifine filter in the cooler line. I expect to get 300+k miles out of it. And I intend to go over the trans and transfer case I pull out of the 97. (Engine too, A head gasket and timing belt job)
