Auto Trans Problems: ECM needed.

New thread same problem.
So the problem is it will fall out of overdrive, then stay out for a while, or even the rest of the day.

Here what I have done to fix it.
1. Changed fluid and filter. Fail
2. Changed both shift solenoids and the lockup solenoid. Added a bottle of Lucas Stop Slip. This worked for a few days, but then yesterday, on the highway, it bumped out of OD again. Found it was now a quart low so I added a quart and it was fine for the rest of the night.
Then today, it started the day for my wife just fine, then bumped back out of OD again.
When she got home I took it out for a test drive and it ran fine for miles of highway and country driving. Then on the way home, coasting down a hill at about 40 mph, pop, back out of OD.

Got home and did some more reading. Got the directions for a manual shift test. Unplug the solenoid wire, white 6 lead plug on the passenger side of the trans, not the blue one. Then drive, manually shifting.
1 is 1st. 2 is 3rd. D is OD. It drove perfect. What this means is the problem is electrical and not in the transmission.
So then I pulled the loom apart and chased the solenoid wires as best I could. Found the one white wire slightly abraded with copper showing. Siliconed and wrapped that. Put it back together.
Test drive, no OD from the start. 10 miles later I stopped at the gun club for a few minutes. Got back in and it drove and shifted perfect all the way home. UGH!

So now i think it must be the computer.
Is there a second computer for the transmission, or just the ECU behind the passenger side kick board?

Anyone have an ECU that they would sell cheap?

Charlie, you have the EXACT problem I had. In my 88 there is just the one ECU. I changed that out about 6 weeks ago and the trans has worked perfectly everyday since. The ECU is not a common fail point for most 4Runners, that is why it seems to be so damn hard to diagnose.

Good luck.

Mark

Thank you Mark. I needed to hear that.
Where did you get your ECU?

Edit: Never mind. I just eBayed one for $30 bucks used. And how the heck did I type ECM instead of ECU :)
