Auto Trans shifting Issue

I have a 1997 4Runner with 3.4, automatic, 2WD, 143k miles. Bought this T4R not running. Since I got it running, I have transmission shifting problems. It will not shift out of low gear until very high RPM. After reading numerous post here I have changed, the shift solenoids, fluid, filter, and also the TPS sensor with known working units with no change. It does not appear to be operating temp related.
Is there a tail-shaft speed sensor that may be causing this issue? looking for any new ideas anyone may have?

Have you checked for error codes with an OBD-II scanner?
When you changed the fluid what did it look like?
 
What do you confided high RPM? When you give it gas, do you press the pedal slightly or half way? Reason I ask is mine came with an ECT(electronic control trans) button and when that is on my engine can rev up to 4500 before shifting. Not sure if this would effect it but maybe check the cables to throttle body for binding or too tight (thinking out of the box here).
 
Well, at my wits end with this project. Changed the rear tail shaft speed sensor today and still no difference. Still will not shift out of low gear until about 5k rpm. Cant believe that there is no one else that has had this issue or has known someone that has. :ybrick:
 
Is it only happening from 1st gear to 2nd? If I had to make an educated guess your valve body is maybe gunked up.
 
Cleared codes and only one that appears now is the 301, random misfire. the shifting issues are the one/two shift.
 
Replaced the ECM today and no change. Had a trans guy hook up a scanner to truck and said it could be a few different things. ECM was one of them. Next is wheel sensors, wiring harness, and last would be a bad pump.
Still looking for more suggestions.
 
make sure your engine is running correctly,

we have people all the time coming into the shop saying they are having problems with their transmission like it slips, or doesn't shift right. most of the time its because their engine has a misfire, needs a tune up, some thing like that, these problems will mess with your transmission because the engine is not doing the work that it should be.
 
Engine running smooth now that I replaced bad coil pack(s) on left bank but still not improvement on the shifting issue. Been researching this original problem on line with other forums and read that if the ABS light is on ( which it is) that will cause the trans not to shift due to a bad signal from a wheel speed sensor. I checked each one with an ohm meter and they are within spec.
Anybody know how to do this and still looking for input on this problem. The speedometer also does not work.
 
When you buy a truck without a test drive, you'll have to deal with the engine or transmission or both. Your offer got to be less than the price of a used engine and a transmission.

Put a low mile good used transmission. 4x2 trans are easy to install and $300-400 in range. I think you have spend a lot of time and money so far.

Take the valve body out and spray it down good with brake cleaner. Use a whole can on it. It's possible it is dirty and causing your issue.
 
You asked for any ideas, so….worn transmission mount with a sagging transmission and severly misaligned driveshaft? beginning of the pink milkshake and contaminated tranny fluid?
