Auto transmission interchangeability

Hey Guys

Did some searching around but still haven't found the answer:

From what I understand there was a change mid-99 in the A340 (Valve body) and possibly again in 01-02 (I'm not sure if there was any change though, and if so what was changed - drive by wire? hydraulic vs. vacuum?)

The reason I ask is I want to know what the interchangeability between the T4R (and even the Tacoma). Would a 96 auto work in a 2000 4runner despite the valve body changes (or any other changes I'm not aware of)?? It has the same no. of solenoids and all, so I might take a shot in the dark and say yes, but not sure if the ECU or anything would be a factor?

What about a V6 Tacoma transmission in a 4 runner? (I have no idea if and when any changes were done to the taco's transmission).

Thanks!!

I can tell you one thing with certainty.

1st Gen Tacos and 3rd Gen Runners are the same thing, just with a different style.

The MAJORITY of parts are interchangeable, the most obvious one not being interchangeable being the rear axle.

A 3.4 Taco will have the same 3.4 that's in a 4Runner. The transmissions will
be the same as well.

If you have the skills, just swap out for a manual transmission from a Taco. :)

What about the year interchangeability? I'm in the same boat and need a 2wd transmission for a 2000 model. I haven't found a definite straight forward answer yet. I'm getting different answers ... one is that 96-02 will work, then I'm also getting that it needs to be a 00-02. Which is correct here?
