Auto Transmission Light on

Hi,

I went to GW forest to do some off road last weekend. I have 4Hi and 2nd gear on for a deep incline. It has lose rocks and I can feel the VSC kick in couple times, but my truck doing fine and moving forward without any problem. When I am in half way up(about 15-20mins), I noticed the A/T Oil light is on. So, I keep driving to the top and let it cool down. Then the A/T oil light is off.

I am wondering if this is anything to do with the 4Hi and 2nd gear, should I use the 4Lo and the light won't go on?

thanks for any input!

I recommend the B&M AT coolers (based on cost effiectivness), (ones made by Dana) they work great and the core is ideal for great amount of cooling vss size.

They are OEM in many vehicles, like newer Nissan's (USA made ones), Fords and Chevy trucks. Tube and fin ones suck, dont get those, those IMO are worse the the stock unit.

My personal cooler of choice would be a Setrab though....

whatever you do, do NOT get a tube and fin cooler. make sure it is a plate and fin style cooler.

tube and fin coolers dont take out near the heat a tube and plate cooler do, plus tube and fins are huge comparitvely

Low range would have definately helped. The transmission would have been under less load.
Its not unsual for them to get too warm, especially on those long hill climbs. Thats one thing that sux with autos....

thanks techno! That's what I thought, I will try that next time to see if it happens again.

Then I may consider install the cooler, thanks!

I'm not sure how many miles are on your truck or what your service schedule is like but now that you have heated up the tranny fluid once you may want to check it (does it smell cooked) or change it anyway. Heat is the A/T fluid killer.

Pour the fluid down the dipstick hole.

I thought 04+ models didnt have a dipstick no more after they changed to the WS fluids? I think all they had was a fill and overflow plugs. Mine is a 03 so i still have a dipstick but i could of sworn i saw some 04's with no dipsticks.

04+ with the 5speed trans moved from the T-IV ATF to the new WS ATF which is engineered to run the life of the new sealed transmission. It must be flushable somehow, just not sure how that works in a sealed trans. Everything has to have a life span though, right...? :(

If you happened to get some early-model 04 and have the IV ATF, the dipstick is red, where the oil dipstick is yellow- they're right next to each other.
