Auto transmission slip

Can you give us some more details? When you say "from drive to neutral" are you saying it slipped out of drive into neutral or you were driving and it started slipping like it was in neutral?

Have you checked your fluid? Is it low, burnt, milky ect? When was the last time you changed your tranny fluid?

Also, let us know what year and how many miles are on your rig.

Auto trans slipped 3 times last night - from drive to neutral. Asking for advice/direction. Thanks.

I'll wing it with a answer since you didn't give much info and it's happened to me in the past. Have you ever replaced the bushings for the shift lever? When Trans is in drive can you wiggle the lever around, left to right, forward and back. When the bushings are worn out and broken it can cause what you describe.

Thanks for your help. It hasn't happened since... but no, I never replaced the bushings. My transmission fluid is new...

Can you check the dipstick? If it's low it will slip more and more.

If it keeps happening and the fluid is good and at the correct levels, there's anti-slip additives you can add to keep it from getting worse. A slipping transmission usually means it's about to go out.

you say slipped from drive to neutral? if you mean it just popped out of gear into neutral, that's much less of a concern than slipping in drive. i had a 4runner a while back that would do that. bad transmission mounts/bushings caused a lot of slop in the drivetrain and on big bumps it would bump into neutral occasionally. not a big deal, just needed trans mounts.

I would check the shifter bushings. Mine slipped and when I checked it was only blue dust left over. Swapped them for 9 bucks and it's brand new! If you look and see that crossbar right above the 4x4 you will see the bolt with blue dust. There's two on top and two on bottom.
