Autodown Windows

i have the drivers sid controls where only the drivers' window has autodown. I'd like to have all windows with autodown. I was thinking of going to the mensmall and picking up some more autodown switches and installing the switch in my controls panel. Can this work? Has anyone done this?

I heard about someone who did this. all they did was go to the junk yard and get 3 switch panels out of 3 toyotas and switch in the "auto" one for each and it worked. I was just thinking about doing the same thing, i just need to find where to get the switches.

Or maybe just replace the front driver with a unit from a '99 4Runner since those have auto up and down on both front windows. I think Toyota didn't do this on the rear due to safety reasons with kids in the back.

Um, not sure cause never tried it... but I believe the window regulator motor has to be replaced at the least... this is if the connector for the switches is the same... A window regulator motor that is auto has to be timed versus a non auto...

I believe all the mechanisms and the timing feature is built into the switch itself. I know other people did this on a different website and they just switched the switch. lol

The auto-up feature has a "jam protection" device that reverses the window if it is obstructed when closing. It's hard to believe that just changing the switch would make the auto feature work like it was designed.

I don't think this is going to work. There are more wires on the auto roll down switch itself as well.

All the relays are housed in the driver switch panel.

I knew a guy that was working on a way to do this, and spent countless hours trying to figure it out and never did.

All of the guts are in the driver sill switch.

can you take the switches themselves out, id like to see what the back of the individual switches look like (auto vs normal).
Im going to find a junkyard and try and get some of these switches to screw with, I think i can do it.

Heres a link to scionlife forum where they talk about it.
Scion Life

Looks like it is pretty easy, you just need more switches.

fr8hauler: I dont think the jam protection would work on the other windows when you put the auto switches in if they dont have the jam protection now. All you are doing is making the window go up or down without having to hold it.

Did you read my reply? This will not work unfortunately.

i dont understand, what wont work about it?
Im just not understanding, it seems logical to me...
have you taken that clear thing on the drivers side panel off, what does it look like underneath?

First off all a switch is is a way to control electricity and ground to the associated part, in this case your window regulator motor. There is more at work than just the switch... Like I mentioned prior, your must time an auto up/doen motor when replacing the regulator or both... you don't time the switch.

And if the connectors have different wires on them, then that would signify to me that the power window wiring harness is different. You could in theory change to the auto up/down feature is you change the switches, motor and harness... I don't think theres anything different about the regulator

Look at my pictures. Everything is HOUSED in the driver side panel, with the relays, etc. just to do the one switch with autodown. You can't just buy switches that say "autodown" on them. Again, this was attempted a few years back by a few people in the "4Runner" and it could not be done. Check out yotatech.com and search for the old posts on it. It's been covered on there many times.:( I was going to try it myself as well. It's a great idea that doesn't look very feasible.

It's cool...No need to get your Blood PSI up.

Noobs are Noobs...

Question: How do you know a good Noob from a bad Noob?

Answer: A good Noob knows how to use the search button!:dammit:

I know what a switch is and what it does, I feel I have some pretty advanced electricity skills. I havent taken the switch out yet and looked at it, but i think the switch has the timer built in. If you go to the car and turn it on, then put the window down and then once it is down, push the switch down again you will hear a click in a few seconds, the same amount of time it takes the window to have gone down. (this happens on my 99, I havent tried it on my 04 yet, I assume it is the same) Because of this I thought it may have the timer built in. Electronically it is totally possible for the switch to control the entire auto function. Because I havent actually taken anything apart yet I dont know how it really works. I thought this was probably exactly how it worked because people on scion life said they did it this way. I dont mean to be pissin you guys off or anything but I just thought it was a possibility. I am still going to look into this. Next weekend I will take apart the switch panel on my 04 and check it out, also I am going to buy a 99-02 switch panel and try to look at that too. Jason I am not saying that you are wrong, and I did look at your pictures, and I see the circuit board and all the electronic components on the drivers side switch panel, but your pics dont actaully show the switch connections themselves. Is there a possibility that the electronics are for the jam protection feature? that is a feature that I dont need, and wont mind if it is not on the other windows.
Also thundr cloud, I am a noob to this forum, but i do definately know how to use the search function. I searched on this and other websites for this, and I thought I found out that it worked. I did not search yotatech, so I did not see all that information.

Call me crazy, but I am still going to look into this more, I am getting a 99-02 panel and I am going to simply substitute the switches. and i will go from there when/if that doesnt work.
I let you guys know when Ive found out for myself that I am wrong. If I can figure a way to do it, I will put together a write up.

No harm at all buddy. I really hope it DOES WORK and you can get it to function. I was just remembering back to a few years ago when others tried this with no success. I hope you can prove them all wrong and get this to function! I'd like to do the same thing and I know other do. I hope you can get this to work. I will try to dig up the old posts on this from Yota. They might help you out.

Yea i hope it works too, it just seems that it would def be the simpler thing for toyota to do, and i think it would be the cheaper thing to do putting all the controls in the switch itself. real big possibility that i am just being stubborn tho
