Automatic Shifter won't Stay on D

hello guys, im having my first big issue with my 97 4runner. yesterday, when my wife pulled up to the drive way and try to put the car on Park the automatic shifter just turned loose. but i mean real loose its sliding thru p, n, d like butter.. so i lifted the emergency brake and turned the car off. now since the shifter is not on Park, my 4runner wont turn on:bash:
if someone had a simila case like mines and know the workaround please let me know im trying to fix this car as soon as i can. thanks in advance.:

Typo on the thread title.. i mean shifter wont stay on Park.

Check your linkage on the transmission. Make sure the bolts havent come loose

never mind, i google linkage and found out what it looks like, actually as soon as i got under the car i saw the arm hanging. went to an autopart store and they told me to go to a hardware store for the bolt and screw. for now it seems like that did the trick. but i wanted to get the factory screw for the middle part of the likage.. any toughts on where i can get that?

Thats strange... I had a shifter problem last winter. I pulled into the garage and the shifter wouldn't go into neutral or park. It was like it was stuck in drive. I ended up finding that there was so much snow built up underneath the car (up in the under carriage) That it was preventing the shifter to move to neutral and park. This clearly isn't your problem lol. Hope you get everything figured out.

well my wife told me she arrived safe to work, and she put it on Park Easily. just gotta get the actual factory screw.
what would be the technical name of this part?

My experience with those strange parts is that I go to the local dealership and ask them what it is called. They have many exploded views of their parts and can often come up with it quite quickly..

I would go to the dealer to get it. Tell them you need the bolt and nut that connects the shifter linkage to the trans. They will probably have to order it. Once you get it and get everything set right, you might want to locktite the bolt so it doesnt come off anymore

thanks toytech, im gonna do that. because the solution i have now is only temporary. but good looking out, you pretty much told me what was wrong with my truck thanks again. :bigok:
