automatic shifting

i have a 89, 22re automatic with overdrive, the overdrive has never worked right and with it in drive from a dead it will skip second so we drive it in 2nd and it works great, plus if the heater fan is on high it wont shift out of 1st, can someone explain this to me, what makes it shift.

First of all make sure you have enough grounds on the motor and the transmission. If there is sufficient ground, then it's the solenoid in the transmission that is bad. You will have to pull the pan on the transmission, and replace or repair the solenoids.

i will take a look at the grounds, thanks, so the shifting is controled electricly then.

Yes the transmission is electronic.
