While I was cleaning the old gasket off the wire wheel removed most of the black paint around the edges of the pan. Also i noticed that a small amount of paint could be scratched off of the inside of the pan. Is this normal for a transmission of this age or should I look to replace the pan? I am leaning towards replacing as I stripped the drain plug (it's holding fine just wont come out)on reinsertion so chances are I will need to retap the pan anyway. Just curious if I can drive it for now until I get the parts in.

The paint coming off wouldn't be a reason to replace the pan but if you can't fix the threads for the drain pan bolt, this would be a reason to replace it. Try using a thread restorer first rather than a tap to reshape the threads. A tap is way more aggressive and might not be necessary.

No, I don't think the paint chipping off will be a big deal. But, how much chipping are we talking about? I don't remember having any paint chipping on the inside of the pan but I do remember some of it coming off when I was using a Dremel with a wire wheel to get the old gasket material off. I honestly don't know why the inside would start chipping. If for some weird reason there's a large amount of paint coming off on the inside, I might be concerned that this could clog the filter port and starve the trans of fluid. Could you provide a picture of the chipping you are talking about?
I wish I had taken a picture before I put it back on but it was mostly around the rim where I was cleaning it with the wire wheel. I did notice that i could scrape a couple small flakes off the bottom of the pan if i scratched it with my finger nail hard enough, but none came off while wiping it down. I ordered a new plug, washer and pan which should be here in a week or two. I will drop the pan and try and get the old plug out and see if any paint has come off while getting the old drain bolt out. If the pan threads aren't FUBAR then maybe I can get away with just a new plug and I will wire wheel the rest of the paint off to be safe. Otherwise I will swap out the pan and call it a day. (The $200 will give me peace of mind for a few more years at least lol) Thanks for the suggestion Tim!

I found three transmission filters on the camelback Toyota website that all say they fit my 98 limited. The two mentioned above and also part # 35330-30011. Does anyone know how to tell which one is the right one for your vehicle? Also, the repair manual mentions a gasket that needs to be installed as well on the filter. I didn’t read anything about that on this thread.
