Automatic transmission problem, reverse/neutral stopped working, need advice

4 months ago I bought a 95 4runner with 155k miles on it. Didn't really have any issues until I took it on a weekend road trip (1100 miles round trip). Right after I got back from the trip, the car started jerking when I would accelerate (only from 1st to 2nd gear - car has an automatic trans). I would have to accelerate pretty slowly for the car not to jerk. This went on for about a week and then a couple days ago I pulled it into a parking spot at work and when I went to leave, reverse wouldn't work. The car almost wants to go forward when I put it in reverse, same with neutral, so it's almost impossible to push it, pain in the ass! It looks to be low on trans fluid. The guy i bought it from 4 months ago said he had changed the trans fluid, don't know if he really did or just said he did. Anyways, now it's just sitting on my driveway. Am I going to need a new trans or a rebuild? What kind of prices am I in for? Any advice will be much appreciated

I think the first move would be to top off the trans fluid and then see what you have. I would also look at the shift linkage . See if anything is loose, etc.

DEXTRON III is cheap - drain what is still in there. If its nice and red then he did change it - if brown then it needed it. Refill with as much as you took out and enought to fill it properly. Read owners manual on checking level and filling - specifies warm trans, running, running shifter thru gears, put in neutral and check.
