Average Miles per TANK

just interested in what people are averaging when it comes to miles per tank...

my last 4runner (SR5 1999) would stop at 15 gallons.... my current (limited 2002) goes over 17 gallons


I always use chevron 87 gas...


(after 6 fill ups) my average miles per tank is around 260/270...

I'm sure if I drove like a grandma it might be a little better...

Contributing factors to lesser mileage:
Body lift
Suspension lift
Undercarriage armor (150lbs)
ARB Bumper
285's....


Not really trying to gauge average miles per gallon...
More so how much everyone's tank will get.. As we all have different setup's

I'm guessing there is high way driving in that. How many gallons do you fly when empty? I get about 225 in the city and fit about 14.5g when empty.

the picture shown was when my gas gauge was below the E... so my last fillip lasted approximately 270 miles...

always chevron 87 gas....

I think all 4Runners have a 18.5 gallon tank.

Most of us have wonky fuel senders that are innacurate though, to some degree. My light comes on when I'm at 13ish gallons with over 5 left.

I usually fill up around 17 gallons and get around 18.5 MPGs, which equates to about 310 miles per tank. I'm on stock suspension though, unlike most people on here:

I usually get 16.5 gallons when the low fuel light comes on, before 33s I was getting just under 18 city, but now I think I'm getting 15-16 city. I got almost around 270-280 avg before 33s, and now something like 250 avg. Hoping gears will help me a little bit.

When I was stock I once had 330 miles on like 16.5-17 gallons I believe and could get 20-21 highway with 17-18 city. Now I get like 220 before I fill up with 14.5 gallons or so. That's all city though with a lot of slow driving/idling. Highway I get like 18-19 mpg now with the sliders(100+lbs), rack, and 2 sizes bigger M/T's and 15-16 city. I keep telling my friends I'm trying to kill the gas mileage as much as possible haha

No regrets though. I don't drive my 4Runner to be economic. It won't get better when she gets a lift and bumper either though. Oh well, the capability and looks will be worth it.


Also, don't forget to factor in bigger tires into the mileage. Mine are 4.7% bigger than stock so over 250 miles it adds 12 miles or so to the total distance. Makes a difference in the calculations.

I'm almost identical to this. I fill up when my gas light comes on at around 230, usually pump in 14-15 gallons. I'm sure it's better mpgs than what I add up as I have not tried calculating it for the larger than stock tires.

Thankfully my speedo is still dead on with the gearing and tires I currently have, so I can easily get my real MPG, but in my dad's truck it's way off, it's really annoying trying to figure out how fast you're actually going when the speedo is at least 20% higher than what it should be.

Around 16.8 gallons and 215 miles mostly city (country) driving. My highway mpg is actually worse at around 170-175 miles driving like a grandpa in the far right lane.

I don't have a 4runner yet, just building my post count aND trying to find one (or an xterra) bit my cruze can get about 400-430 miles on a tank, and my wife's Traverse usually gets about 250-300.

Mine's a 2002 SR5 V6 4WD with stock suspension,tires,etc. other than new catalytic converters installed this year and new spark plugs/PCV valve/air filter last year.

Gallons from my last 3 fill-ups, always the same Valero near my job, 87 octane: 14.8, 14.5, and 15.5. Always in the 320 mile or so range and no fuel warning light. I used to refuel when the gas light turns on, around the 340 mark, but due a change in my work schedule I'm already on the highway heading home when that happens. Indicated miles is pretty close to actual driven miles according to google maps, my headunit's navigation system, and my iphone's map app. I have driven farther than 340 miles on a single tank, search my old posts for the magic number LOL

I have a 17.2 mpg average when combining hwy/city. On the hwy I'm getting between 17-22 mpg depending on my speed. I can get 21.7 going 60 on flat hwy all day.

I fill up every 225 miles so I won't be able to give you per tank miles. Should be due for a fill in the morning. I have an UltraGauge that keeps track of everything for me. At 225 miles I hardly ever need to add more the 12 gallons to fill my tank. Using the full tank I've gotten around 300 miles on road trips.

Dont you think thats not great for the engine? Not much ground to stand on since youre getting 17 mpg but by not using your whole tank doesnt all the heavier still in the gas sink to the bottom and by never using your whole tank it just stays there? Thats just what ive always thought. You think you could run it down all the way just for data? im really curious for the results.

I average about 210 miles/tank, and fill up about 15 gallons in the summer. Winter that drops to about 190 miles.

Keep in mind I also have a dent in my gas tank... a decently sized one, too.

I blame the tires and altitude :hiding:

It's fine for the engine. It's an average of 18.75 mpg basing 225 miles on 12 gallons. I fill up close to my house since the gas is about 12 cents cheaper per gallon. Based on the distance between my house and work I'd run out of gas if I tried to squeeze in that 4th day. I also don't trust the full gauge in my 4runner at all since it has a mind of it's own, and gives different readings each tank. I'll be able to get a better idea this weekend when I go out of town. This will all change in about 2 months though. From December through February i get a lot worse gas mileage due to the cold weather.
