I have an 05 Sport Edition
It's stock
But with some meaty Goodyear duratracs!
I done think I should be getting this bad of mileage that's almost 5mpg worse than they were rated for
Is this common, or I needing some type of tune up.. Thoughts, experiences, etc

How are you calculating your mileage?

Also, sounds like your tires are not stock size, are you correcting your calculations to take that into consideration? Bigger tires = fewer revolutions per mile, but the odometer doesn't know that, so the odo will read fewer miles than you actually drive.

When my off-road "summer" tires/wheels are on (BFG MTs in 255/75/17 on FJC steelies) I multiply my miles driven by 5.5% to take into account the error on the odometer. I came up with this number by comparing the odometer to a GPS tripmeter.

Also: What kind of driving do you do, do you let it warm up before you drive it and for how long, how long have you owned it, are you using 4wd, etc? There are a lot of variables when it comes to mileage.

Final note: If you are figuring mileage by the little gauge on the dash, forget it. We call that the "lie-o-meter" for a reason. It's worthless for calculating mileage.

The correct way to calculate mileage is this:

Fill the tank. Try to fill it the same way every time (for example, when I fill my tank I always "top off" by letting the pump shutoff twice. If that's the way you fill up, always do it that way.) If you really want an accurate measure, try to fill up at the same station or even the same pump, if possible.

After you fill the tank set one of the trip odometers to zero.

Then drive normally. Drive until your tank is down to 1/4 or lower.

Fill up again, fueling up the same way. Take note of the amount of fuel and miles driven. Miles driven / fuel consumed = MPG.

Now, if you are running bigger than stock tires, you'll need to figure out what your error calculation is before you can do the above. You'll need a decent GPS unit with a trip meter (almost all of them have this.)

Set the tripmeter on the 4runner to zero, and the tripmeter on the GPS to zero. Drive at least 100 miles (the more you drive, the more accurate your figure.) Make SURE the GPS is on at all times while the vehicle is moving or you'll get an incorrect reading.

After the 100+ miles, look at the number on the GPS and the number on the odometer. If your tires are bigger than stock, the GPS number will be higher than the truck's odometer number. Let's say you drive 100 miles exactly (as shown on the truck's odometer) but the GPS shows 96 miles. Divide the odometer number (100) by the GPS number (96) and you get 1.041 (IOW, a 4.1% error.)

Now, when you go to fill the tank, take the miles driven (let's say your odometer shows you went 355 miles) and multiply it by your "error" of 1.041. That means that while the odometer read 355 miles, you actually went 369.5 miles. Divide that by the amount of gas to fill the tank and that is your true MPG.

Well I'll have to match GPS with miles on the car and so forth then. they're not huge tires I just assume bigger and heavier than normal tires they're either 255/70 or 265/70 for a 17" rim

I doubt it's 12.7 when properly calculated as mentioned above (a lot of people totally forget the tire correction)... also remember the winter fuel blend fuel is good for a good 2-4 mpg drop typically... at least this is my experience.

manufacturer's mpg estimates are performed in a closed environment with perfect conditions at ideal temperatures... yada yada yada...
cold temps (e.g. denser air) = more fuel usage to maintain the factory AFR.... in addition, more idling time (to "warm up") the car or you in the winter also reduces ones mpg... the bottom line is estimating mpg in the winter is really a crap shoot.. I'd say wait till summer when there are less variables.
 
Oh yeah I agree and get exactly what you're saying

I let mine warm up for at least 10 minutes every morning before I leave and 5 minutes plus when I'm out in town or after classes

It is in the negatives here quite often this winter for temperature

So yeah that all comes into play along with tire size

Is a 255/70 or 265/70 larger than factory or no?
 
265/70/R17 is larger than factory. I run them and I have about 4% correction factor. (Multiply miles driven by 1.04 and then divide by gallons used.)

Its more around a 7% correction.

I got a speedo healer and love it. No more math needed. I have 285s now so its set at 10% correction. Miles and MPH are dead on with my GPS.

I agree. We have a local automotive talk show here, and they talked about the winter blends of gasoline. You should take it into account for your poor mileage. Your mileage should improve slightly when the summer blends come online again.

A 265/65/R17 will turn approximately 660.2 times per mile and a 265/70/R17 will turn approximately 638.4 times per mile.

638.4 / 660.2 = .9669 or 97% if you round up.

I'm not interested in who's right or wrong, but it's important to get the correct info out there. God knows there are so many threads with incorrect information and speculative opinions.

I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I've tried in two difference online calculators and both come up with ~3.40%. Which calculators were you referring to that show 7%? Are you perhaps including an extra few percent to correct the stock speedometer's inaccuracy?

Every tire (even the same overall size) may have a slightly different overall diameter (due to tread differences)... so the only way to truly calculate your individual error is to divide the diameter of your new tire by the new stock tire diameter (whatever that was for your vehicle from the factory)...(this will generally give you 1.0335 or something... (and this is the number you multiply by the trip odometer to get your actual miles driven as previously stated to calculate your true mpg after a tire size change)
That being said... going up to 265/70-17 from the stock size of 265/65-17 generally gives around 3-4% error (tread depth varies, but not by enough to let the error creep outside these bounds for these overall sizes).... If you're using 7% error for these tires sizes then something else is going on outside of the tires to give you this error... numbers/math do not lie.

IME even this is not enough. The "tire size" is a nominal size - the actual size will vary somewhat (and will vary over time as the tire wears.)

That's why I use the GPS. Assuming the GPS is a more accurate indicator of mileage, you just take all the tire size calculations out of it.

And of course, a GPS may not be "100% accurate" and some GPSs are more accurate than others - I have two GPS units and when I use the trip meters on both, they come out with different results.

Which one is correct? I don't know, but I figure that at some point you have to just make a decision about which numbers you're going to use and live with that. :shrug: You're not looking for absolute, mathematical precision, you're looking for something that's "good enough to work."
