AWD Transmission

Looking for another 4Runner after selling mine a couple of years ago. I had a 2002 SR5 Sport, which had the AWD center diff which I really liked.

I have never driven one of the older 4Runners without the AWD, and I'm wondering if its really worth searching for an AWD version. I live in Utah, so we get a fair amount of snow. The AWD was always nice on the highway as I could go up to 68 mph in AWD.

Is there a speed limit on the 4Hi of other versions? Should I be concerned with getting an AWD version? Any significant advantages?

I didn't know there was a speed limitation on the AWD versions.

With the 4WD, no speed limitations.

I can not speak for the AWD version myself as I have a 1997 SR5 with the mechanical j shifter. I don't believe I can go over 50 or something close to that. I look at it this way:

1. If you want to be able to drive highway speeds while having four wheels with power, I would get a model with AWD.

2. If you want something with more reliability, the older J shifter style 4WD selector because it is purely mechanical rather than actuated.

I personally think having one like you used to have would be nice. I vote find an AWD capable model if you would like a little more piece if mind.

I've gone as fast as 70mph in 4-Hi when I was younger with no problems.
With that said, if the weather warrants 4wd or AWD you probably shouldn't be driving that fast anyway.

There are no limitations to the speed once you are in whatever mode you want to be in. The limitations (55mph for the mechanical shifter and whatever for the multi-mode electronic shifter) are for SHIFTING into 4WD/AWD... You can shift out (to 2WD) anytime.

Really though, if you need true 4WD, you shouldn't be doing highway speeds. I do drive it highway speeds to get the 'miles' in to keep the 4WD system lubed once a month or so though...
