AWD V8 Locker Options???

All the ones available for the FJ, Tacoma, 4Runners will work. This includes ARB air lockers, factory e-lockers, or a Harrop e-locker. They won't interfere at all with the AWD (full time 4wd) system.

There's a local guy selling an FJ rear axle assembly with factory locker on craigslist. Could a guy replace the whole axle or would I have to pull the 3rd and modify my housing? Not to mention the wiring and such..

You could do it either way. If you can buy just the 3rd member from him it would probably be cheaper, and in my mind easier to replace just the 3rd than swap in a whole new axle housing assembly.
They make a wiring kit that sounds like it will make it a lot easier:

I'm not so sure that the FJ cruiser axle will fit the 4runner as the frame on an FJ is 2" narrower than a 4runner. The brackets will probably not line up. What will work it to modify the housing and install the elocker in your housing. Thats what I have and it works great. BTW-- most problems with the elocker are from the actuator sticking. Make sure that it doesn't stick in either direction or you will have to address that issue as well.

the frames are the exact same. theyre the same chassis under the body, the only difference is that the FJ has a ~4.5 inch shorter wheel base. an FJ rear axle is a direct bolt in to a 2003+ 4runner.

What is that guy talking about? I was certain the frames were the same width. The axle assembly would still fit right?

I have been looking into this also lately. Here is a good thread on Toyota 120 on installing an FJ E-locker into a 4th Gen 4Runner. Since the V8 has 3.73 gearing, from what I have found, it looks like all the automatic transmission and E Locker equipped 2nd Gen Tacomas, FJ Cruisers, and 5th Gen 4Runners came with 3.73 gears so I am hoping that we could take the third member from any one of those vehicles but I don't know for sure.
I have a Detroit trutrac and love it. I have had it for about 50k miles and in a lot of different off-road conditions and it has performed amazing. That being said I live in Michigan so we don't go over many rock or up many mountains. But moderately challenging tracks and lots of snow it is amazing. Never have had a wheel in the air so don't know how it does in that type of terrain. Once it is in you never think about it again and it was less than 800 installed.

They are DEFINITELY NOT the same. Go measure one right now! I know that they are different because I ordered a skidplate for a 4runner and a skidplate for an FJ cruiser and they are exactly 2" narrower on an FJ. Then, I put the FJ cruiser skidplate on MY OWN 4runner and discovered that they FJ frame is 2" narrower.
Don't talk about things you don't know.

I'm so measuring it tomorrow. Too dark and cold right now but my brother's FJ and my 4R are parked beside eachother. The diff housing can be swapped easily though, NYC-Runner did it.

They are the same width in the front and in the mid section as far as I can measure. The front lower crossmember is the same width as mine, as well as the crossmember that gets bolted on to the last skid. I'm sure there are some minor frame differences such as the FJ not having the crossmember where the spare tire hangs from but for the extent of this thread they are effectively the same IMO, although I couldn't easily measure the width of the frame above the skid plates. But the width of the front skid plate bolts are the same so I think our front skids are interchangeable although he has the 2-piece Budbuilt design and I have the single-piece RCI design.

Where's the wheelbase difference? Is the chassis itself shorter in the middle? I know the rear links are interchangeable, so it's not there. Or are the link mounts 4.5in farther forward? Driveshafts interchangeable? Just curious... I'd always assumed 4R/FJ chassis were identical...

I measured 3" extra length between the front body mounts and the frame's rear lower link mount, but the driveshafts are the same length. Also, the rear frame crossmember protrudes 6" further measured from the center of the axle tube on the 4Runner.

as zim already said the extra wheel base is from the middle of the frame being longer on the runner than the FJ. all the bracketry is in the same locations just the middle is stretched. the runners also have the extra crossmember after the rear axle since the body is longer with more overhang.

I would say that extra rear crossmember is mostly for the rear tire carrier the 4R has, but we could both be correct.
