AWD vs Full-time 4WD

The 4WD system on 4th Gen 4Runners is a full-time 4WD system meaning that you can drive in 4WD even on pavement. On occaision someone will refer to this as an All Wheel Drive (AWD) system only to have someone else comment that it is not an AWD system but a full-time 4WD system.

So, what do people consider to be the differences between an AWD system and a full-time 4WD system?

Right, no t-case is usually considered AWD.
