Hello everyone. I've been using this site for a few years now; I've always searched threads for my answers. Today I actually registered so I can participate in this great forum. I have a 2000 Limited Ed. w/ 130k miles. Just like most of you, I take care of my truck and when issues arise I fix them immediately.
So here is my issue. For several months I have been having this chirping/whistling noise coming from the rear wheels when they are rolling. I only hear it when I let go of the gas because the wheels aren't under torque. It's been literally driving me nuts. After finding an axle seal leak in the rear driver side axle, I thought I found the problem. Although I am maintenance savy and do all of that on my own, when it comes to big repairs I need a helping hand. I brought it to my family friend mechanic; he replaced the axle seal. The noise went away for a few days but then it came back; it was not nearly as loud as before though. Then a few days later, I noticed differential fluid leaking again, but this time is was almost pouring out! I brought the truck back to him; since he could not see any problems himself with the axle, bearing, etc. he sent it out to the axle shop where they analyzed the entire axle assembly. They found that I indeed did have a bad bearing. So i ended up getting everything in there replaced; cost me a small fortune. So as soon as I get the truck back, I'm still lightly hearing the dam noise again; I don't understand because everything within that axle is brand new. I'm starting to think the noise may be coming from somewhere else.
If its not the axle/bearing or anything within the axle housing, and if its not the brakes, then where could this noise be coming from? I'm certain its coming from somewhere within the wheel considering I only hear the noise when the wheels are rolling. It gets me mad that I spent so much money replacing all of that stuff and the noise is still there. I understand I needed to get all of that fixed, but the original reason I brought it in was to fix that dam noise! :wtf:
