I just finished installing one of these iPod interfaces into my 2004 4Runner with Scion head unit. The kit that I bought was good for the factory head unit as well so I think it would work exactly the same way.
I bought the Wire-tunes kit off eBay for $15. I've seen it go for much cheaper but I wasn't that patient.
Installation was a piece of cake even though I had no instruction manual.
There are two wire sets and a digital interface box. One of the wires goes to your iPod, the other goes to the back of the head unit into the unused CD changer plug. There is a second plug in the digital interface to head unit harness that goes unused. I have no idea what it is for.
I routed the ipod cable through the centre console and into the storage bin through a drilled hole. That way I keep the ipod out of sight.
Once turned on, you hit the CD button to activate the CD changer controls. You hit it again to play the CD in the head unit.
Track ID text does not display. All you get is disc # and track #. The disc # corresponds to the playlists but can only go up to 9 then it displays weird alpha characters. On the ipod display, all you get is an Axxess logo.
Sound quality is superb.
Overall, I give this unit a satisfactory rating. It is definitely worth the $15 I paid, especially considering I paid $177 for a Dension icelink
lus unit for my BMW for which I get only slightly more functionality.
If you can get one of these cheap on eBay, I say go for it.
