Back door won't stay up (open) in cold

Hello...

I wanted to check if anyone else had this problem. The back door of my 04 SR5 just won’t stay in the fully opened position (all the way up) when it is cold outside. It is weird, I would fully open it to get stuff out of the cargo area and it would slowly come down until stopping at the middle (or on my head).

It would seem that those two high-pressure gas tubes do not work, but this only happens when it is cold. Probably one of the gas tubes is not working, and the other one cannot hold the weight of the door when the pressure and temperature drop.

Any thoughts?? I am still under warranty, but I do not want to go to the stealer unless it is necessary.

Sounds like you had a seal go bad on one or both of the shocks. I would take it in for warranty work, they should be able to replace that in about 30 minutes.

It is funny you should mention this because this past week (been extremely cold here too), my liftgate was struggling to make it up all the way. It would take it awhile to fully open and I kept hitting my head against it. Mine isn't falling down yet though. This is definitely under warranty but I just have to find the time to make it to the dealer.

I would say it is deffective.

The temps here go to around -30 C (-22 F) and I have no problems with my liftgate.

I agree with Sac State and would bring it in to be fixed.

No problems here either and its down to -25c at times - I would take it in - it is a quick job to fix if they have the parts on hand. (I would show them the problem before you leave however - if they keep it in their heated service area and then try to reproduce the problem it might not happen when things are warmed up!)

I just took in my wife's truck for the same thing. Bad shocks, but I had to prove to the service guy that the tailgate was not working correctly. Good thing I had my truck there to show him the difference.

Back Door Stay

There is a TSB (BO001-04) from January 14, 2004 that addresses back door stays. I had mine replaced without any problem. It'll take the shop less than half an hour to do the work. Tell them you want the stays with the "Cold Spec". Part number 68907-35060 for the RH side and 68908-35060 for the LH side. There are more details in the TSB. I'll try attaching it to this reply.
