Back hatch is rusting out badly

I've noticed within the last month or so, the back hatch has TONS of little rust spots all over. Its not really dark rust but more like bright orange tiny dots all over the back.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to prevent any further problems? I usually do a buff/wax job a few times a year but with it being middle of winter here in Ohio I haven't done it since summer. I think its the winter causing the orangeness.

Yeah if they salt the roads up there, im not sure what kind of weather you have up in Ohio. I have had that happen where I live as they do salt the roads. Im thinking claybar to clean it up nice and then throwing on a nice coat of wax/polish and seeing where that gets you. Should work. Damn i hope for your sake. = )

check out my build thread, using an orbital sander and the krylon you can get peace of mind for little money and time. for the paint try meguiar's ultimate compound then seal it with a quality wax

Have you or anyone you know of done any metal work near your truck?
Like in your driveway, at work, etc....
My son's El Camino has the same little rust spots on it. Musta happened when I was cutting, grinding & sanding something in the driveway and his car was close enough to get the fall out.

No, no metal work near my Runner. My fiance always takes his truck to his buddy's garage to do stuff.

We had a few big snow storms up here requiring lots of salt so I'm sure thats what its from. I also think I noticed it more because its white..lol

Yeah true that. Im sure a nice scrubbing will do the trick. claaaayyyyy bbbbbaaaaaarrrrrrr............ha

I'll vouch for claybar's effectiveness. If it really is just stuff sitting on the top of your paint, claybar should be able to take it out and make your truck's paint look good again. It really makes the paint sooooo smooth!!

definitely clay bar your hatch and those little spots will disappear.
