Impressions? Did you feel scrunched? I just did a comparison of rear seat space between the new model and a honda crv, and I'm a bit spooked. Grant it most of the time I'll be riding in it with max two people. But what gives when one of my larger relatives needs to go with? Do I keep the 4runner at home and take the prius? This irks me some, and might be a deal breaker. Look forward to your experiences in the back seat. Thanks.

How did you do a comparison? I sat in the back seat of a 2010 at the Texas state fair and it felt exactly the same as the 4th Gen one that I have except the new ones recline. I'm 5'11'' and it was just fine to me. Now the 3rd row ones are a different story!!Kids only in the 3rd row.
3rd rows are a joke in a 4Runner size body-on-frame, solid-rear axle truck. They just don't have enough room. If you need three rows, you really want a bigger vehicle.
I just got specs from edmunds and/or the manufacturers' websites. That's why I want the perspective of those that have actually sat in the vehicle. I don't want a 3rd row. This would be my first 4runner.
Here are some numbers for back seat leg space:
4runner: 32.9 inches (5th gen)
CRV: 38.5 inches
Prius: 36.0 inches
Minicooper: 29.9 inches
At least the 4runner beats out the standard minicooper! But only barely if one goes with the clubman (32.3 inches).
Does anyone else find this incredibly odd? Thanks for the discussion.

i have no idea where they pulled those mini cooper numbers from, they had to have taken the front seats out for that.
The interior dimensions definitely don't look good on paper, but seeing it in person is the ultimate deciding factor. I'm surprised by the rear leg room (confirmed on Toyota's site). It seems way too small given the other dimensions of the car (both interior and exterior). It's like something isn't adding up.

I think what the actual leg room measurements don't take into account is how high the seat (butt) cushion is off the floor. So if the seat is higher, your legs will be more closer in front of you rather than stretched out. Sort of like sitting on the floor with legs flat in front you vs sitting on a bar stool with your feet almost directly under you.
