Backpacking and Gear Talk

Waiting for my new Salewa Firetails Evo Mid boots to come in for my bday gift! Tried on the mountain trainers at REI and damn they were impressive but overkill for the environment I'm in.
 
You all were talking about boot before. If you have not owned a pair then I will point you to a pair of Danners. They are my all time favorites period!

Stopped into the Rain Shed in Albany today. Walked out with six yards of DWR ripstop and a bunch of climashield. One quilt coming up.
 
A fun, yet comfortable and light item, I forgot to add was a woobie! I could sleep anywhere with my woobie. Cheap, warm, soft. Some sort of connection was formed back in the day, now I gotta have it.
 
I've had the Salewa Firetails Evo Mid boots for almost a month and they are my favorite shoe. No break in required but I wore them around town and camp for a few weeks to make sure they were the right boot for me.

I also purchased the Kelty Catalyst 50L. It's a great pack that is VERY comfortable when loaded but, I do more car camping than actual backpacking so I will be returning the pack and look for something in the 30-40L range day pack. Any suggestions???

I love Granite Gear, and have been using their packs for about 10 years. I've also been using a Gossamer Gear Gorilla pack which is a smaller/lighter pack. It has no frame so you'll have to watch your pack weight. You won't want to carry more then about 20 lbs in a frameless pack.

Osprey also makes some great packs, and I know a lot of people that are using them.

I don't pack a ton considering I do car camping but I do carry some camera gear. I was using a Lowepro pack that I loved but it was a frame less pack and it definitely put tension on my shoulders. Had to return that too :pout:

I am planning an overnight hike/camp trip in Colorado this summer with a buddy so I will need something that can pack my tent, sleeping gear, food and a change of clothes.
 
Yeti Coolers and tent recommendation

Yetis are great but,yes, not exactly light. The old saying if "content is king, marketing is queen" they have done a heck of job marketing their products!

As for tents, if you are you in the backcountry and cant stay in the back of the TR4, and you like only the best products, Hilleberg tents are as good as they come!

It really depends on that gear. Depending on how well it packs down will determine the size pack. Both my wife and I use a 40l pack for warmer weather, and 60l pack for colder weather. We could probably go down to a 30l pack since our stuff is very light, and very packable.

I decided to try out the Osprey kestrel 38. I will also get a sea to summit compression bag for the tent so there should be enough room to pack the rest of my gear. Depending on how many days I'm out (which is usually at max 2-3 days)I don't carry a lot of extra clothes when traveling other than an extra pair of undergarments.

That's good to hear...not the crazy part though. I was a bit worried about packing a 3 day weekend into it but I think it'll work fine as long as I pack right.

Learning to pack what you need vs what you think you need is the key. We always packed way too much clothing. We quickly learned on the AT that you don't need what you think you need. We carry one set of clothing for hiking, a set for camp, and a pair of socks for each day (maximum of 4 pairs). We wore the same hiking shirt, and pants for up to 7 days. Socks seem to last only 3 days at the most before they turn into a board.
 
Looks like my gear list is going to be changing again. A few days ago some ass clown broke into my 4runner at work, and snagged my pack. Didn't take anything else but my pack either. They got a nice pack, sleeping pad, top quilt, tent (no poles), and my cutting gear. Pretty much took everything ultra-lite that I had.

I'll be updating my list as I pick up new items.

Sorry to hear about the theft! I love this thread btw, I am trying to get back into camping/hiking and this is a great resource, there are so many new brands and especially UL gear now it's crazy. I'm looking at picking up an Osprey Atmos 50 or 65 pack. I tried one on at Scheels and it blew my mind how comfortable the anti-gravity system was. Given, there was no weight in the pack, but compared to others I've tried on it was super nice. I'm a little torn between the sizes though. After carrying a VERY overloaded pack and being miserable hiking on a couple trips, I definitely know the benefits of keeping the weight down and am looking strongly at UL gear. Seems like people love the ULA packs as well. *Subscribed* :nerd:
