I was thinking that at 250K miles, I was needing a catalytic converter. The shop I have used in the past saved me a bunch of money. They ran a backpressure test ($20) and they said the cat pressure test "barely moved the test gauge."
They recommended I keep doing whatever it is I am doing with my truck. They said the catalytic converters on these rigs are virtually "bulletproof". When I asked if I could get better performance with a newer cat, they said it would not make a ton of difference and I would probably never get rid of the Check Engine light....
If you are not familiar with the backpressure test, they drill a hole before the catalytic converter and insert a fitting hooked to a testing device. With the truck running at various RPM's, they test the pressure.
