backup camera 2 quick questions

Hi! So I got a new nav system for my 98 4runner and I'm really thinking about putting a backup camera on it. I have 2 really quick questions about it thou. One, where is a good spot to put the camera? just next to the tail gate handle? And also what wire to I hook up to to tell the system I'm in reverse? I was looking in a couple of books my dad has over thanks giving and I couldn't find anything in the dash. I would much rather run the wire as close to the dash as possible. I found this page that talked a little about a wire in the drivers side junction block but I'm not too sure if I know what that is. . . is it the box behind the fuse box with all the wires and stuff?!

thanks!

you will need to hook the unit up to the reverse lights to make it work. Just run a wire under the carpet all the way to the back, and splice it in, or trace the wire all the way up to the kick panel.. If you dont do a lot of towing, i would recommend getting a cover for your trailer hitch, and mount it in there, That way, you dont drill any holes in body panels.

I had mine mounted on the bar above my trailer hitch. Going on 3 years and no problems whatsoever.

The camera sits flush to the edge of the bar and provides a great view of the rear. Since I'm concerned with running over little kids (and their toys), mounting it in a low position allows me to see even more of the ground immediately behind my truck.

sweet, I'll try the just above the trailer hitch :) Good idea!

So, is there no where in the front that indicates the reverse lights are on?

there will be a wire behind the gauge cluster or at the shifter assembly that should tell you as well. I have the wiring diagrams on my laptop, but i'm on the desktop right now .... i'll take a look at them later on and see if i can find it.

sweet yeah, diagrams would be great :) I've looked a little bit on line but all I can find is the audio diagrams and stuff.

Thanks!

all of the factory info can be found at https://techinfo.toyota.com for a price of course.

I only downloaded the 2000 diagrams when i was doing my alarm, so thats all i have. For the 2000 model, the wire that triggers the "R" on the gauge cluster is red w/ yellow trace 3rd pin plug C. There is only other Yellow/Red wire which is pin one plug E and goes to the light control switch.

If you want the diagram itself give me an email address, and i'll send it over.

If you have a manual trans, then i'll have to do some more looking to see if there is any other place to grab it beside the switch in the trans and the lights.
