Backup Camera

Anyone install an after market backup camera? I recently installed a Kenwood 8120 since I didn't buy the T4R with Nav. Anyone have any say on a good backup camera to go with the stereo? I'm considering the Kenwood CCD 2000. Thoughts?

Also, if any else has the Kenwood 8120 let me know, I have some user quesitons. Thanks

For what it's worth, I, too, just put an 8120 into my 4Runner. I was tempted to go with the Kenwood cam, but the interface with the 8120 is just a simple composite connection, so there's no need at all to go with the Kenwood camera of something better suits your needs. I also looked at the Pioneer ND-BC20PA which mounts like the kenwood (traditional camera shape) but has a DSP that corrects for visual distortion and provides for distance guides. I think I'd pick that over the Kenwood, even though it's about $100 more on the open market. What I don't like about either of those models is that you still have something sticking out like an unnatural protuberance.

Ultimately, I went with the Boyo VTL300 backup camera. It's in the form of a license plate frame, and if you don't know what you're looking for, you wouldn't really notice it, especially the black version (it comes in chrome or black). I'm happy with the camera; it has good low light visibility and it's got a nice field of view. You do have to get used to the fish-eye distortion, however.

I'd rank the cameras thusly: 1. Boyo, 2. Pioneer, 3. Kenwood.

i have an Eclipse 5495 and recently added a back-up camera. Super easy install and now it takes me only one try to hook up to trailers!

The Eclipse camera is the one. smaller than the size of a quarter. The model is BEC-105

My real question here is that it seems like there is a place that might be good for mounting. If you look on the bottom left where you unlock you trunk you can see a square cut out where maybe the manufacture puts the factory backup camera. Can anyone verify this?

I was planning on mounting a camera on the inside of my spoiler back when i was looking into the avic-z1 and eclipse units. It looked like with a small enough camera (eclipse looked like it would work) you could easily fit it o the inside of the spoiler between it and the rear hatch. That way you would get a good fov down and depending on how much camera you wanted to show, out as well. I cant help with wire routing though since i havent done it yet though.

Yeah, I remember seeing another member do it like that. My only concern is that my 4R is white and most of the camera's are black. I don't think I would do any harm to the camera if I painted the outside white. I think that would really help to blend it in if I did mount it under the spoiler. Now to decide on which camera. I was thinking of the Kenwood CCD200. Anyone else have any recommendations?

I have the 8120 and the CCD 2000 backup camera. I installed in the stock location just left of the rear handle (exactly where the notch is). the only problem is that if you want to completely hide it, you have to cut into the hatch itself because of the size of the camera. I didn't want to so it sticks out a few millimeters lower than the stock does. you still can't really see it. Let me know if you want some pics.

The kenwood camera works just fine. I don't really have experience with other aftermarket backup cameras but its comparable with the stock toyota one.

I'll take pics when I get home. It might be easier to just order a painted trim piece instead of going through prepping your stock. Unless you're talking about the camera itself?!? As long as you take your time, it should be straight forward. I used a dremel.

I updated the bt but my phones aren't on the list so not sure if it fixes the iphone issues.

So I'm having Best Buy install my backup camera and they guy said he would do some minor custom stuff. I just need to buy the camera. I was thinking of the CCD2000, but really have no idea on any other that might fit where the stock camera goes. I put the Pioneer one on my truck with my AVIC-Z1. Instead of the left I put it on the right of the handle. Its pretty visible though compared to some of the better installs some others have done. I don't have any pics at the moment and I'm in New Orleans for the week for work but I can take some pics when I get back home on Friday.

I went out and looked at my lift gate and it looked more flush than yours. As though I would not be able to simply put in there w/o doing some customization. Is your 4R an 2008 SE? I don't even think that would make a difference because your is obviously a 4G. Hrmm, I'll keep you updated.

Yes, i removed the trim piece to cut out the notch and mount the camera. you have to take apart the inside of the lift gate to get to the bolts holding it on.
