Backup Camera

Darkie
When they (or you)installed your SWI-Jack were you still not able to use your "Mode" on your steering wheel? They guy that just installed mine says it won't work with the 8120. Thoughts?

Anyone install an after market backup camera? I recently installed a Kenwood 8120 since I didn't buy the T4R with Nav. Anyone have any say on a good backup camera to go with the stereo? I'm considering the Kenwood CCD 2000. Thoughts?

Also, if any else has the Kenwood 8120 let me know, I have some user quesitons. Thanks

It looks like I installed my rear view camera similar to how Darkie did. I posted about it in the Audio & Electronics forum:

Instead of posting more of the same pictures, I figured I'd just give the link...

I, too, have the 8120 with the SWI-Jack, and the Mode button definitely cycles through the inputs (USB->iPod->Video 1->Video 2->etc)

Yeah, that's what mine does. it cycles through.

So, it does go through you ipod, tuner, video and such? Hrmm, the best buy guy said this won't work and it doesn't even work. So, you're saying he's lying. Thanks. Good info.

Man, you guys must have had much better luck with your SWI-Jacks than I did. I can't stand how mine works with my 8019. It's a piece of crap compared to the SWI-X I was using with the Alpine I had in my last car. All I basically use it for is volume control.

Maybe I'll try reprogramming... Hopefully that'll take care of it.

So, I spoke with my guy at best buy today about how all of you guys can scroll through you modes but I can not. He said he would "Look for some literature" on it. I guess that means he might be trying to cover his butt. Does anyone have any info on this before I try to contact the SWI-Jack ppl? Any would be helpful. Thanks.

P.S.
Best Buy also hooked up my DVD player to my parking brake. I was told I would just need to disconnect it from the parking brake and simply hook it up to the ground for continuous playback, does this sound right to anyone? I'm starting to doubt their knowledge.

Sounds right. I'm not sure I would do modify the parking brake ground wire, though. The DNX8120 will play back video from the iPod without any grounding of the parking brake wire, so you could just rip your DVDs to iPod and not have to modify anything. And if you DO ground the parking brake wire and you have an accident whilst a DVD is just in the drive (not necessarily playing), you could be subjecting yourself to pretty significant liability. And your insurance may make some noise about not covering some aspects of the claim. It wouldn't necessarily play pretty in front of a jury:

Lawyer: Sir, do you have a Kenwood head unit that is capable of playing DVDs?
Witness: Yes.
L: As it was installed by Best Buy..., could it play DVDs while you were in motion?
W: No.
L: But your head unit was capable of playing DVDs in motion, is that correct?
W: Yes.
L: Because you modified it?
W: Yes.
L: Just to be clear, you could have watched DVDs while parked without modifying it, is that correct?
W: Yes, I believe so.
L: And was there a DVD in the drive at the time of your accident?
W: Yes.
L: No more questions.

Just food for thought.

A/V1 - my SWI-Jack works ok. volume controls bug me the most...unresponsive from time to time but everything else works fine.

Abe - Sorry no info on the programming but i'm sure you can find it somewhere on the net. Most installers should hook up the parking brake wire to cover themselves. Like Loki, i have all my videos on my ipod and just play it off there. I wasn't aware that you could play videos off your ipod while driving so I didn't hookup the parking brake wire (mint green) when i installed it.

Too funny Loki. I agree, i'll play it safe and not modify it.

I called the PAC ppl and they said it should work w/o a problem (it being my mode button) and to have my Best Buy guy call them and they will help him install it correctly. He (Best Buy Guy) didn't sound too happy when I called him on his lack of knowledge on the unit. But hey, you should be man enough to ask for help if you aren't sure on what you're doing instead of just telling someone it won't work. Well, we'll see what happens. He said he'll fix it when I bring in my car to have the car alarm installed.

That's kinda funny. My volume controls, mode & track down, I think, work fine, but everything else is a crapshoot. I also installed the right side switch bank, and some of the switches do something completely different than what I set it up to do. I have noticed if the volume control is unresponsive, if I adjust the volume control on the unit, it starts working again with the steering wheel controls. I definitely think I'm going to try to reprogram my SWI-Jack soon. I just need to yank it out of the dash & do it (oh fun!).

Your right side switch bank? What do you have there? I figured something could go there but I didn't know what. Let me know what you have if you don't mind. Oh, and would love to see some pics of it. Does the SWI-Jack control the right side switches as well?
