So, I've had my new (to me) 2005 SR5 all of 3 weeks and already had some drama. It's a pristine, 1 owner, garage kept vehicle in great shape with only 66k on it.
Last week I took it to my local Toyota dealership to get the timing cover oil leak fixed under warranty. They kept it overnight because they didn't have the engine gasket kit in stock. It was finished the next afternoon (Friday) and I picked it up with no issues. I drove it about 5 miles to my house and parked it until Sunday. We were going out of town for a few days so my daughter and I used it to take the dogs to the kennel before we left. It's about a 15 minute drive to the kennel, no issues so far. On the way back we were about a mile from my house when things turned ugly. The A/C stopped blowing cold, all the dash lights lit up and we were a rolling cloud of steam. WTF! :wow:
Luckily, I was next to a parking lot and pulled over and shut her down before the temp gauge made it to the red. I looked under the hood and saw coolant pouring out from behind the themostat housing. I called a tow truck and had it taken right back the dealer. I left a looong note and dropped the keys in the night drop (service dept closed on Sunday).
We pull the camper with my wife's Armada so it wasn't a show stopper but still delayed us 2 hours. The next morning I called and they got on it. The mechanic didn't seat the O-ring properly and it blew out as soon as the engine got up to temp. Said he was surprisd because he let it run for 2 hours the first time he fixed it. That explains how they burned 1/4 tank of fuel without putting any miles on it. Doesn't the owner's manual say not to idle more then 15 minutes?
I picked it up when we got back in town on Wednesday. I thought of complaining to the service manager because they offered no apology, free oil change, car wash, bottled water, key ring, nothing! I signed the receipt and the cashier gave me the keys. I spent months finding the perfect truck and some idiot can't seat an O-ring and almost destroys my engine. I didn't bother even calling because I won't let them touch it unless the work they did fails... again.
Anyway, I went over every inch of it today and all is good now. Thanks for listening to my rant.
