bad gas mileage really bad

i have a 95 sr5 v-6 4x4 5spd v-6 4 runner , i had it 1 month, i have gotton 10 miles to a gallon at best 9 miles to a gallon last tank 8.9 to be exect, it runs real nice has just passed pa emissions tests, does not seem to leak gas i live in the major city but at 10 mpg i drove 50 miles of 160 on highway, sometimes it seems like a slight flat spot in it when you go fron 1st to second, but it runs real good, is this why maybr i got a good deal on this truck, i love my truck

You may want to take it in for a fuel injector service (around $90). The BG products that are used do a good job. Also, you may want to change the plugs after the fuel injector service, to get the most out of your engine.

Unless you know when the last tune up was done it would be a good place to start, all the things stated above and also the fuel filter.

BTW you should be getting around 16-20 MPG city/highway normal.

I'm going to take a stab at the obvious here. Have there been any mods done on the truck? Lift? Bigger tires? Performance exhaust or turbocharger?

Slapping enough mods on can chip away at fuel economy. If the truck is totally stock, I would follow the advice already given & get it to a dealership so they can do a head to toe checkup.

If it is indeed stock... how many miles does it have?

You may want to consider doing a full tune-up.

oil change
change ail filter
change fuel filter
change spark plugs
injector cleaner
lube drivetrain
air up tires


You said it runs good so it probably is not misfiring, I imagine you are running filthy rich and the problem may be bad 02 sensors.

Bad 02 sensors will usually trigger the "check engine" light to come on. I would start with cleaning the fuel injectors and a fuel additive (44k). And I agree with the above, if any modifications (suspension, bigger tires) have been done it WILL affect your gas mileage.
