I have always heard problems about the gauge in the 3rd Gens. People have said never trust the fuel indicator in the dash. Other than changing the fuel filter, you could run a couple of cans of seafoam through the gas tank, change the air filter, give the throttle body a good cleaning with air intake cleaner, change out the PCV valve, clean the MAF sensor. Those are a couple of things you could try to see if your gas mileage increases. One other thing you could do is change out your O2 Sensor. O2 sensors are expensive so you might want to see if it is bad first. Since I have a California vehicle, I have an Air/Fuel Sensor and not an O2 Sensor. My buddy's Taco was getting bad mileage and he eventually changed out his Air/Fuel sensor and his gas mileage was back to normal. Hope this helps.

I never believed that I was a lead foot but after reading this thread, I just might let off the gas a little bit. I must admit though, the winter does make a huge dent with gas mileage. I was in Colorado for two weeks with below freezing temperatures and I got HORRIBLE gas mileage.

At best, I could manage about 260-275 per tank with average driving style, but when I get heavier into the throttle, I'll be getting like 240 or 230, and that is after putting in a good 15-16 gallons. Highway driving sees numbers up in the upper 290's but I dont think I've ever seen more than 300 on a tank
winter in Sacramento shouldnt effect your gas mileage that much though(born and lived there). up in MT it does though, always having my 4runner in four wheel drive. I my gas mileage this summer dropped from 19mpg to 12mpg. checked my filter (cleaned it). but ended up replacing my O2 sensor. about 35$ at Napa. but a first gen only uses the one wire style sensor. thats all it was.....

well I kinda feel like the black sheep (in a good way) but I drive 65 to 75 use cruise as traffic allows and do very little city driving..I feather the pedal when I don't need to power it, I use union 76 gas and rarely put pedal to metal.....my miles per tank before the light comes on is from 330 to 390 that is about 16 to 20 mpg well within the manufacturers specs.

i got 260miles on a tank until my 4runner died right next to a gas station.lol.once i get my timing belt and water pump replaced with a major service tune up at the dealership ill retest my gas mileage.
