I DON'T CARE!
I don't know why my post struck a chord with people, but the 10-12 other post about blacked out lights, hood scoops, badges, blue lights, plasti dip, window tint, and all other harmless mods did not. But I don't care.....
Paint you rear diff orange, run 26" rims, wear your trucker hat backwards....go nuts....paint the town red.....do what makes you feel special......
But please don't try to explain to me how the Internet forums should be understood or what is off limits to "not like"
NOW....... Can we get back to posting the mods we don't like so I can enjoy laughing at other people? Are we done explaining why I cannot be against spray painted axles and 22" wheels? I hope so.
Here is another one that should make some people mad. putting a $109.99 sony head unit in place of a far superior factory head unit because you think you are a stereo master.
When I was shopping for a TE, I saw not one, but two that had some single din, rainbow colored cheap head unit installed. After market head units in general are fine, and in many cases even better (I put the Pioneer AVIC D2 in my Sequoia)....but why on earth put a Sony explode single din in a 2011 TE?
It is wrong to put 22" wheels on a 4Runner.
I run wheel spacers...Like anything else, a poor install or using poorly designed spacers is dangerous. I've been running properly installed spidertrax for well over a year now with no issues. I'd argue that a tire failure is more likely to cause "someone else's junk to hit your family" than a well designed and properly installed wheel spacer. But hey, that's just my opinion based on my experience, so you don't have to agree with me.

Calm down, Nathan Clark. I actually like your FJ shift knob mod. I don't think anyone is attacking you or your thoughts of what is cool or not. I politely said that we should ALL be careful as to condemn something one way or another.
I have a cold air intake. I don't care about performance. I like the sound.
I have a Magnaflow muffler. Same reason as above.
I have strobes. It's dumb and I know it.
I have DiNoc everywhere. Serves no purpose but aesthetics.
I lifted my truck specifically to lower my fuel economy and to make it that much better off road the 6 times a year I'll go.
I have a PA system with sirens. Because I'm a dork.
I'm running 18" wheels with spacers because I love my wheel choice and they didn't make the proper offset.
Now please stop reading peoples responses as if you're the only one in the room. I will stop quoting you from now on so that you don't think I'm attacking you.
Don't be a baby, it's just the internet. I have read your build, I know what you have and for the most part I like it.
But that don't change that you called me out, so don't get all twisted when I respond.
I was making a point that you were worried about my post about cosmetic mods being bad, when there were 5 times as many before my post you could have been offended about. And when you quote someone to shake your finger at them, don't play the "fine I won't talk to you game" when they respond.
Quote me all you want, disagree with me as often as you want, just don't go all :lalala: when I have a rebuttal.
I have a TRD CAI...I have a hybrid badge, I have an FJ Shift knob....why...because the title to my truck is in my safe... But I'm not angry that other people don't like it, I just don't care.
This thread was about mods that are not a good idea, not deadly, not funny, not ugly, just a bad idea.
Wheel spacers are a bad idea, there is no way around that, even if you can justify having them and have had good luck with them, it does not change the fact they compound forces on the steering, bearings and studs...it's just not a good idea. But it happens......my CAI is not a good idea, but it looks cool under the hood and sounds okay when I smash the skinny pedal....
Now if we can let this go, that would be great, and I will keep on admiring your lights and CB install and you can go back to wishing you had my shifter knob.![]()
Honestly, it's you that seems to have trouble letting go and accepting criticism.
Just an observation.:biggrin2:
Properly installed or not wheel spacers are a bad idea. Your bearing, studs and steering was designed a certain way and as 1enineer said...thinking you know better than the engineers that built it is foolish. Spacers change the load force on your studs, the centered weight on your bearings and the scrub radius of your steering. I sold my last 3rd gen with 242k on the clock and it still had all of these parts factory. Comparing a years or even 5 years of wheel spacer use is not the same thing. Wheel spacers are not a risk with taking IMO. As you said we do not have to agree, this has been debated many times on many forums. Argument could be made about suspension lifts and other mods, I get that, but spacers cause more damage than you can imagine over extended use
Be careful..... This one hurts some people.

Let's not turn this into another wheel spacer debate. If you cannot afford the right wheels, and wheel spacers are your only option what can you do.
I don't think this thread is going well for me.......everyone gets a little upset if you mention something that they feel differently about.
I have a CAI and a Hybrid badge on my 2013, and I'm not butt-hurt that people say they are a bad mod on here.
I understand your logic. However, all else the same, wheels with an offset=the width of a spacer are going to have largely the same effect.
I fully understand that running a modified suspension, larger tires, and a different offset than factory, not to mention the extra weight of armor all have a cumulative effect, as do most folks that make informed decisions on modifying their vehicle. I needed the extra width to clear bypass tubes on the shocks in the front and rear by a comfortable margin.
Also, I never said I knew more than engineers, nor did I imply that my mods, including my wheel spacers would have zero effect on the longevity of other OEM components, so don't put words in my mouth or imply otherwise. Don't call people "butt-hurt" when you are the one making the initial inflammatory comments.
Antman said:Tinting over factory dark-tinted windows.
I meant no offense. I said I was not butt-hurt, I was not implying that you in particular were. I should have chosen my words a little better my apologies.
I am also very hard on people/ vehicles with wheel spaces because of my time running with PSC Motorsports so I tend to offer more of an opinion than people ask for. Sorry man.
fret not, Nathan. i've been working the FJ knob for almost 4 years now, so i'll take the heat off your back for that particular "bad idea mod". http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/65632-gear-shift-knob-change-2.html#post577896 :drum:I have a TRD CAI...I have a hybrid badge, I have an FJ Shift knob....why...because the title to my truck is in my safe... ...and I like my worthless bug shield........that is all......
After all the bickering, I'm surprised no one brought up SPACER LIFT KITS, from a function perspective...worthless, and most people end up upgrading to a full coilover lift because they eventually realize that fact. CAIs to me are not worth the money to me but that doesn't mean that's the case for other people, same as spacers. As far as aftermarket tint over tinted windows goes, to be honest I don't notice a difference and yes I do use my rear view mirror. It's still light enough the auto dimming part still works, but I didn't tint the fronts too dark for safety reasons.
