Bad Ignition Switch Tumbler or Steering Column Lock Mechanism?

Once in a while the tumbler for the ignition switch won't turn after the key is inserted. This happens regardless of which ignition key is used, so the problem does not appear to be caused by a bad key.

The tumbler will move after the steering wheel is rotated.

Is this problem normal? In other words there is no problem at all? Or is this a symptom of a problem that will get worse and leave me stranded some day?

If there is a problem, is the tumbler the cause, the steering column lock mechanism the cause, or both the tumbler and steering lock mechanism the cause?

If you are parked on level ground, without the wheels against the curb and you don't touch the wheel after you turn the key to lock, you should be able to unlock it easily. If you are on a hill, against the curb or turn the wheel to engage the lock after turning the key to lock, it will fight you when you try to unlock it. This is normal.

I had this same problem in my old 97, after finding it wasn't the steering lock, and trying multiple keys I ended up replacing the whole ignition and that solved it for me. It was a cheap and easy fix.

Maybe you have a crappy key or worn out. You can pull the passenger side door lock. There is a code on there. If you truck has never been rekeyed then a locksmith can code cut you a new key that may work a lot better. Spray very little wd40 on new key before putting in ignition. Do not spray wd in ignition. Helps brand new key not stick on new sharp edges.

2015 4Runner. recently bought it and noticed that the trailing edge of both doors had 5" of paint scratched off AND the steering column was rotated a few degrees clockwise. The Toyota Service Dept. is fixing it now under the Certified Warranty. They think someone tried to pry into the door's rear edges with a wire or metal piece to unlock the door(s) and then force the steering column clockwise to break the lock mechanism. This model has no 'Start' button, just a key.
The Carfax didn't mention an damage from a break in and the Certified Warranty missed inspection of the steering column and paint scratches. I'm waiting for the lock mechanism part to arrive for final fix. The whole column is off the car now.
