Bad Mileage

Ive got a 98 Toyota 4runner SR5. Ive owned it for 3 1/2 years and have had no problems. I normally get 19-20 mpg in town. This winter I started get 14-16 mpg, and still now that its summer. Ive been researching a bit and it seems that the O2 sensor may need to be replaced. Any ideas anyone? The only problem that has come up is bad mileage, no check engine lights or anything else. How do you know which sensor to buy? and is the mass air flow anything todo with it? I have no clue. Any ideas would be appreciated.

do you still have the factory plugs and wires that were on the 4runner when it was new?? How about your fuel filter??

that may eat some mileage maybe???

Bad gas mieage

Clean you MAF sensor. Its a easy thing to do, Just a can of CRC electric sprayer will do, Auto Zone or kragen or really any auto part store will have it.

Give yourself and 1hr to accomplish it. I have it down to 30 minutes after doing it regulary.,

I just did my deckplate and checked my sensor and after two years and running a K&N it was perfectly clean but I sprayed it for good measure.

With my 265/75 and a bit of a leadfoot I get high16s/low17 around town.
We'll see if the deckplate helps after a few tankfuls.

Get a Scan Gauge II for around $150 to see if its a Lead foot problem like me.. :) you will be able to see the load on your engine as well as Gas Mileage. I highly recommend one. It plugs right into your OBD plug.
