Bad MPG’s/What’s yours?

Hello, I got a 1998 SR5 and recently I’ve been getting horrendous mileage. I get about 160 miles on a tank and about 14 mpg. My truck is mostly stock I haven’t done anything that would affect MPG at all, and I don’t drive in a heavy gas usage kind of way (No slamming the gas or aggressive driving) but recently It seems like it’s just been too low. I’ve had the truck for about 6 months now and I remember getting like 15-16 MPG in the summer, so I’m wondering what could be causing this terrible mileage. Do they change something with the fuel in the winter? I’m also curious about what you guys are getting mileage wise with mods and without. Looking forward to feedback.

Winter gas is formulated different. I getting 13 to 15 mpg out of my 1998.

The 2wd get better milage than the 4wd I have 2 2wd 2001 they get about 20 freeway I built a 1997 2wd for my sister Inlaw the gear ratio is different it gets about 17 freeway.

As I told another person make sure your services are up to date plugs,wires, air filter, tire pressure even you oil changes. Nothing to do with mileage but doing all the gear boxes are just as important and saves money in the long run.

If they are up to date then you can you can look at things like a worn engine, clogged exhaust ect. For help people on the forums need a bit more information like does it idle ok does it have good power.:keyboard:

2wd are lighter the 4wd. 4wd mostly weigh close to 4k pounds. This is why are rotors have issues the braking system not heavy enough.

All mine are 4wd. It's not uncommon for me to get 12 to 15mpg so depending on your area. Quite possible to get 14mph as an average. Plus being its winter mine idles a little more then in the summer.

Tires can even change a few mpg averages. Depending on tread patterns.

Depends a lot on where you're driving. On a long road trip, 100% highway, I average about 21 mpg, can get up to 23 if I spend a lot of time behind semis (don't need to tailgate to see the effect either). On a week where 99% of my driving is in the city, it'll be as bad as 11 mpg. Stock 02 4WD FWIW.

I get around 14-15 with my 97, lifted with 33" all terrains, I took an 8 hour trip yesterday and averaged 19.5. I do notice worse mileage in the winter, I lean more towards the 14mpg side in the winter and get 15 in the summer

I’ve owned 3 of these things. All with 265/70-16 tires. They all get 17-18 on pavement and about 15 on gravel.

Roof boxes and crap lower mileage. Do you have one of those?

You should replace your O2 sensor, do a tune up, run some injector cleaner.

I only have 3k miles on mine since purchase and oddly enough my fuel economy was better Before I did the full maintenance (though, that was almost all summer fuel vs the last 3 tanks since the end of November, and was testing the ECT switch being on, which may do nothing). Anyway, I'm at a total average of 18.5, with 17.7 since the full service. I've seen a high of 23mpg on the 100% freeway drive home from purchase.

My truck has Very road-oriented tires which is where most people probably lose a ton of their economy, no real lift (1/2"-ish), otherwise completely stock. I'm not super happy with the fuel economy, my T100 (bigger, heavier, taller truck with the same engine/trans) got mid 19's... but I also had manual hubs on the front and I think those might have accounted for some of the economy.

Close enough to stock 4x4 4 cylinder auto is getting 10mpg. Not sure why, don't care enough to fire the parts cannon.

The best I ever got was 19 or 20 with touring tires 100% highway travel.. With my snow tires on no way will I ever see that on highway be lucky to get 17-18 tops.

Here is Oct till now on Tetanus 1 (1998 S45 4X4 auto standard size tires ) mpg per each tankful the same type of gas from the same gas station with the same tires and me only driving it. so probably as close to a control as we can get

The last few were even with no plugs and Fuel injector cleaner is run through several times a year per full tank.

I'm in an 02 on 295/75/16 mud tires with a 3in lift getting 16mpg. Best mpg Ive ever gotten was on a tank of 85. A friend changed his fuel filter and that helped with his mileage.

Nope. No roof racks other than the stock one. Now that I’m getting all these responses I forgot to mention I have a 4wd and drive about 20-30 miles a day city miles(only like 6 stops but it’s about 40mph all the way to my destination)

That’s certainly some sort of issue. Those 4 bangers get much better mileage.

Yea, they don't get awesome mileage, I'd expect closer to 16, but there's not any drivability issues so I haven't bothered. It's been steady over 2500 miles and lots of different driving conditions, definitely strange.

I get 17-18 driving town and city. I get around 220 to 250 a tank and put 12-15 gallons in when I fill up. I probably average 225/13 per fill up. Been doing it for almost 20 years now. Both auto and manual. I’m not heavy on the skinny pedal, but I’m not driving miss Daisy either. Highest hw speed is 70.

If my rig was getting 14 and I wasn’t turning 33’s or pulling a boat Id be looking for something to fix.

01 4wd. I’m getting on average 260 miles a tank.( tested with about 13 tanks so far). About 85% of it is highway driving

There's a lot of variation in what people define as city driving. My commute is in downtown DC: 2 mi, with a dozen stop signs plus as many lights, which results in something close to 11 mpg.

If you're getting 14 with 6 stops at 40 mph, that sounds a bit below what it should be.

Do you have a scanner that reads live data to make sure you are driving in closed loop instead of open loop.?
