Bad news

On the way home from 2 weeks in CO an hour and a half from the the house, the T4R started with a slight whine then stopped. Then, started running HOT for less than 50 yards til I could pull over and check it out. I suspect the waterAny pump went out. I tried to add water while running the engine and it shut down on me. Got towed to a small town shop and they said there was ZERO compression.

Any ideas on what went wrong or the cost to fix it?

How is the timing belt? If there is zero compression in the engine, it sounds like you may have lost a connecting rod in the block (known to happen before).

Can the engine be manually turned at the crank?

Sounds like you lost your waterpump. Knowing that the timing belt also drives the waterpump I would guess that the pump went out and aloud the timing belt to jump teeth witch could give you no compression. A broken conecting rod would only affect one cylinder.
You can pic up a timing belt get with all new belt's, waterpump, and ideler pullys for less than $400. Will that fix your runner? Maybe. Luckily the 3.4L v6 is a noniterferance motor so the being way our of time will not by itself destroy the motor. However the being super hot might. Adding cold water to a super hot motor is also no bueno. How ever if it we're mine I would replace the pump, timing belt and alrelated items and hope for the best good luck and keep us posted on what happens.

I think the same thing that drifter33 posted. The noise could have been the bearings in the water pump and eventually at highway speeds it just ate through the belt. Pull the top plastic timing cover check out the belt. If its still there and not scuffed up there is a bigger problem.

I got a full timing belt kit for $288 plus shipping on ebay. Hopefully it's just that. Good luck
