Bad Transfer Case

I'm going to look at another 99 T4R tomorrow. The owner is trying to unload it for cheap on account of a "bad transfer case". Is there anything else it could be that would appear to be the xfer case? I've never really heard of stock 4Runners dropping transfer cases. It has 212k miles on it but still, that's not something you hear of too often. Help me brainstorm here. It's a 99 Limited 4x4.

My friend with a 2001 (with multi mode) broke something in his transfer case. It made a clatter, especially when backing up.

A blown diff can make a ton of noise too.

You can do a junk yard case for about $1000 or less, or an inchworm lefty for $2000.

If we knew what the symptoms were we might be able to give you a better idea on what's going on. With the Limited you have the multimode setup, which adds in alot of electrical stuff to the equation as well.

Yeah, he's asking a pretty reasonable amount. I see them locally on car-part for 400 or so. I'm assuming the truck in good condition would go for at least 6500, right? Assuming everything else is working and in good condition? I'm going to check it out tomorrow and see what i can figure out.

If you can make my 96 tcase work I'm selling it and the shifter for 200.

I had a my transfer case blow up in my 2001... there was a good 4 inch hole in it. I bought a used one for about 325. If that is all that is wrong it shouldn't be too expensive of a fix.

How much would you guys pay for a northern truck with high miles and a bad tcase?

Apparently it still drives, but I don't know the symptoms yet. From what I've been reading, the actuator is what goes most of the time. Any ideas?

Turns out it was just the rear end that went. Guess the shop lied to him about the transfer case. They took the rear driveshaft off, and locked it in 4wd. The back pinion spins freely so that ring gear must be toast. Guy said it was humming for a few weeks and then it quit moving. lol
