Badge removal...

How easy is it to remove the badges on the 3rd gen? Is there some kind of flat tool I can insert behind them and just "pop" them out? I did a search but didn't find anything that was 3rd gen specific.

I used a plastic putty knife and "Goo Gone", it worked pretty good. Fishing line might have been better, I did end up with a few tiny surface scratches. Although they buffed out no problem.
 
Debadging for anything is the same, so if you find a write up or something for a 4th gen, that will work exactly the same. Your 4runner will just be older and more work to clean up.

Most people will use a blow dryer or heat gun and some dental floss. That worked fine for me. However, with your 4runner being 11 years old, your going to have a time getting the outline off the hatch. When you get the badges off, you will have to scrub with goo gone and a polishing compund to remove all the left over adhesive and dirt build up around where the edge of the emblem was.
 
Actually, I'm not debadging. I just want to 'black out' my badges. From what I've seen the combination of the desert dune color (fancy word for tan :p ) looks really good with blacked out emblems.

So I take it the badges are glued on? I thought they had little metal prongs that stuck through the body work?

If it works I may take on the grille and then even the bumpers.

The rear "T" symbol has prongs, the rest don't on a '99 AFAIK. If it's like my '97, the front "T" is screwed on from behind and you have to take the grille off to get to it.
 
I know this thread is a few months old, but instead of starting a new post, I'll add to this one.

I have a 2001 4Runner that was painted about 5 years ago due to hail damage. They put the rear emblems in the wrong places and I finally decided to do something about it! I've read on here to use fishing line/dental floss/plastic putty knife and also goo gone. After that, I'll want to put them back on in the right places. I take it I have to clean off the back of the emblems and then how to I put the back on? If I didn't want to do this myself, where could I have this done?
 
If you go to any autparts store they sell an adhesive specifically for the purpose. Its in a little metal tube, made by 3M, usually costs around 5 bucks. Thats what I have always used and it holds up really well
 
Thanks for the tips. Does anyone with an 01 4Runner have the measurements of the emblem locations? I have a pictures of where they should be, but thought maybe someone had or could take the measurements...

so i just put the emblems back on. I used a level and measured everything but they still look a little crooked to me. i'll leave them on for now because I'm probably the only one that will notice.

The level may have hurt you if your truck sits arse high or if it wasn't on level ground.



What's the "T" on the front grill Brian2Sun was talking about? That the same thing as the toyota sombrero

I used this 3m stuff today and holy crap does it suck!!! It's very stringy and messy. I hated it. Just use the silicone adhesive or tape to whomever reads this thread....that's my .02
