Baja Rack vs. Gobi Stealth Rack

I am so glad they finally called you. I was getting worried there. Glad to know your rack is on its way. I'm now just waiting for an update on some other era orders.

I got a call this morning from heather at Gobi Racks,

She explained why they were delayed, gave me the shipping confirmation I was looking for and apologized for the delay.

I am happy now as that was all I was looking for.

My rack is on route and hopefully I'll have it next week.

Gobi has just reclaimed some points in my books for customer service.

Thanks Mark for handling the situation, I appreciate it.

Anyone ordering a Gobi should order through Mark (RiDE) as the customer service that HE provides makes up for what Gobi was lacking.

thanks again,

your customer service skills are above and beyond which makes up for gobi's

hopefully gobi's improves through yours.

congrats jca21!

Mark, what about the rest of us? We still would like to have some sort of clue as to what's going on.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the explanation for the delay?

apparently there was an 8 week back log of orders.

thus, as more orders were added, the back log grew bigger. apparently its been cleared up now and mine shipped last thurs or fri.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but back log or not there should have been communication. A phone call or email takes a few minutes at most. Regardless of the rack being shipped, if someone had $1300 of my money for over six weeks without so much as an email, I would be much less forgiving than you are.

Not being a stick in the mud as I agree..

I hear that. It really sucks when you are so damn happy to buy something and a vendor drags it out so long that you are more excited that dealing with them is over than for receiving what you ordered.

well,

like i said, i did get a call/update from them so its so far so good.

hopefully the other folks on here will get an update through mark or gobi directly. :cowboy:

The big issue started with Gobi's raw materials supplier running out of the material Gobi specifically uses for their racks. This screwed Gobi over and of course that trickles down to us (longer wait). Good news is raw material issues are taken care of and everything is back on course. We'll start seeing a bunch of good news from now on. :) Don't let one little hiccup in raw materials set you back from getting the rack you really want. Don't settle. ;)

btw- These racks are handmade in the USA.

I will have to disagree with you on this Mark. The big issue for me was the lack of communication from Gobi, not the wait. They were unreachable at one point, which is simply ridiculous. That's no way to run any business or treat their dealers/customers. There's no excuse for that kind of behavior.

Sadly this seems to be the norm for a lot of vendors in this industry. Maybe there isn't enough competition or something.

While any capable specialty fabricator will have a QC process for producing consistently good products, I think it's the group buys that completely pooch their production scheduling. Many also need to sub-out some part of the process (typically laser cutting or powdercoating); that part of the process is largely out of the fabricator's control.

Take ShrockWorks for example; I was told that they do a couple of thousand bumpers per year (that averages out to around 5 bumpers PER DAY .. EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR!) I'm sure it's much the same for Gobi or BajaRack.

Now add a group buy with an order of 15-30 of any given item that are all supposed to ship during the same week. Scheduling goes off the rails, shop employees are run ragged and customers are hot under the collar for shipping delays. I had to wait 4 months for my front bumper, even though I paid full price up front and I didn't get it any faster than those who ordered their bumper through a group buy. (I did eventually receive a discount BTW).

I think many fabricators just simply give up on responding to hundreds/thousands of emails asking when each item will ship.

The best way to make a small fortune building off-road gear is to start with a large fortune. Being crazy about what you do also helps.

Anyone out there in Northern VA, specifically Loudoun or Fairfax county with a Baja long rack? Would love to meet up so I could check it out in person, I'll buy a burger and/or a brew for your time. I can only get so much out of the pics without seeing one in person. I'm most interested in seeing the overall height and the full cross bars.

Have already seen the Gobi Stealth thanks to Ducmonsta and really like the standard set up with the height and couple cross bars / mesh. I also very much liked how Ducmonsta set his lights into the rack. Seemed to blend right in. If I had to choose today based on seeing the Gobi in person and pics of the Baja, would pick up the Gobi in a heartbeat.

If you're up for it and near by, please PM me. thx.

I think Joneseey (spelling) and limamike are near you. They both used ducs shop. Lima has the baja utility, and I think jonesey has baja long rack

Thanks for the heads up. I'll pop them a PM to see if either one has interest.

Everything sucks about Gobi! Their business practices, super long wait times & then lie to you about it, horrible customer service & way over priced. Baja Rack's are really nice along with a few other brands.
