Baja Rack vs. Gobi

I am in the process of getting a rack for my 2015 4Runner and am stuck between the Baja and Gobi systems.

I reviewed the forum here and heard about the mount/dent issues with the Baja systems. I called Baja yesterday and spoke with a rep. He said the issue was that Toyota made mods to their roof designs unknown to them, thus causing dents. The rep told me the mounts have been changed and the issue resolved.

Any update or input would be great appreciated.

Ref mounts..That's what I was told...Leaning towards Baja..Gobi roughly 50% most cost...

But you get a ladder! Are the ladders that useful ??

Toyota made mods to their roof design? I'm calling 100% BS on that. I saw the forums and picks when I was deciding and I doubt Toyota redesigned a whole roof overnight when no one else had these issues.

That being said I would recommend [MENTION=68079]drabbits[/MENTION] and his rack. Similar to Gobi yet not a price gouge. If I didn't try a 3rd option I would have bought his.

Edit: his also work with the Gobi ladder
 
I'd not be going with a product just as soon as I'd found out that they 1). had denting issues and 2). blamed someone else and shirked responsibility for said denting issues.

At this point you know what you are getting into and the risk.

If Gobi is too expensive then how much do you think dent removal from the roof will cost you?

I'm in the same position: split between Baja and Gobi.

Baja changed their design, so dents aren't an issue anymore.

I don't have a desire for a ladder, so that doesn't sway me towards Gobi. I also like the flat look of Baja's Utility Rack, but that's just looks...

I have to ask, all those who are pooh poohing on the Bajarack: Do you actually own one?

I do and, although the feet redesign was a bit a nuisance that is still being sorted out through replacement feet shipping, the damage was far less than people are making out (I'm one of several people who didn't get damage to their roof but was glad to get the replacement feet all the same). In any event, if you purchase one now, you won't have to worry about that.

BR is also still sorting out a court case with GOBI over their ladders, otherwise we'd see those available as well (I do believe it's GOBI who is the one disputing BR's ladder design).

I have never seen BR admit it was Toyota who was at fault, so unless you have proof, I'd be a little less inclined to believe they actually said that.

In any event, I'm not saying one or the other is better, I'm just trying to set the record straight on some vendor bad mouthing.
 
I thought Baja's original excuse was that their tooling wore over time?

Now it's that Toyota changed the design of the roof? (Which didn't happen)

Which is it?

After reading through the entire "Advisory" thread, it also appeared that they knew about the issue for several months and continued to sell racks with the issue.

If I were in the market for a rack, I certainly know which one I wouldn't buy.
 
I have a baja. No problem with it but I want a full length Front Runner rack. So much easier to actually use. Baja looks good though.

I actually stopped by his shop for some custom work on my 3/4 rack and he admitted wait times previously but they have been corrected and everything made right to his customers. He is working 7 days a week for these racks to bring lead times down. I wouldn't hesitate to order a rack from him.

I have a baja rack affected by the mounting feet scandal. It has been a pain, but t the redesigned feet mitigate the issue. They have been responsive to the issue in my case. My dents were not that significant, but I also learned about the issue before I applied much weight to the rack.

Regarding the ladder, I do use mine, which is a Gobi ladder and compatible with the baja flat rack.
 
I'd also vote for the drabbits, if he has truly solved his lead time issues. I've had mine since March, and have been super impressed. The craftsmanship is excellent. The mounting system is solid and fits entirely within the existing channel.

Do we have evidence that Toyota did/didn't change the roof slightly? Are all the roof dents limited to specific production years? I ask cause I've noticed some differences on my 2016.. such as AC hard lines being changed, rear crossmember studs changed from M8 to M7 fine-thread, and potential differences in how the XREAS system is mounted (although I'm still confirming that one). I'd find it odd they change the roof channels but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
 
Baja blames everyone for their F ups. Mounts, powdercoating.... and people are really recommending Drabbits? LMAO you think GOBI is a long wait? I have a GOBI simply because a hella deal fell in my lap. I love the looks and functionality but don't care for the weight. If I had to do it from scratch I'd go K9 or Frontrunner..... I might even sell my GOBI to go that route
