Baja Rack vs. Gobi

I have no experience with wait times on any rack. I bought my Gobi from an ex member. If Drabbits is upfront with wait times and is close to it in his ESTIMATIONS on shipping and arrival of his racks then it would be a no brainer. I would go with him if I was getting a new one. I like his design, quality seems good by all who have bought one, and its cheaper than a new Gobi. I wouldn't go with Baja. Thats just my .02.

Any idea on what options are available and current wait times? I went to his website but I get no menu, just an image.

I actually stopped by his shop for some custom work on my 3/4 rack and he admitted wait times previously but they have been corrected and everything made right to his customers. He is working 7 days a week for these racks to bring lead times down. I wouldn't hesitate to order a rack from him.

Even amid the dent "scandal" (I even read through the advisory thread) I ordered a Baja utility rack this past July. I still contacted Baja to make sure they had corrected the issue, new feet, and that my order would be updated. I love the design the price was good. Also, the only quality issues I have seen have been slight powder coating issues and the feet design.

I'm happy with my decision. :fencing:

Went with Baja myself for several reasons
1. Better customer service, ie quick answer of questions, answer their emails/phones, they follow up with emails/phone messages.
2. Baja gave a real quote to ship to me in Canada, Gobi would not even take the time , they said $1000 being they did not have time to figure out customs/duty/shipping cost. I ship every month to many countries it is not rocket science.
3. Baja fixed the roof problem in a timely fashion.
4. Lastly the cost difference, this was an added bonus.

Being a business owner, I appreciate good customer service, being that is how I would treat my customers as well.

For what it is worth, Baja does manufacture their own ladder for the 5th gen now. It retails for $215.

I have a baja. No problem with it but I want a full length Front Runner rack. So much easier to actually use. Baja looks good though.

Same here, not an issue with the Baja Flat Rack since the day I installed it. I've never owned a Gobi, but I know that I don't like the design and it would not work nearly as well for my purposes.
As far as ladders go, I would have absolutely no use for one. Perhaps someone who is really short (<5ft) would?

I have to ask, all those who are pooh poohing on the Bajarack: Do you actually own one?

I do and, although the feet redesign was a bit a nuisance that is still being sorted out through replacement feet shipping, the damage was far less than people are making out (I'm one of several people who didn't get damage to their roof but was glad to get the replacement feet all the same). In any event, if you purchase one now, you won't have to worry about that.

BR is also still sorting out a court case with GOBI over their ladders, otherwise we'd see those available as well (I do believe it's GOBI who is the one disputing BR's ladder design).

I have never seen BR admit it was Toyota who was at fault, so unless you have proof, I'd be a little less inclined to believe they actually said that.

In any event, I'm not saying one or the other is better, I'm just trying to set the record straight on some vendor bad mouthing.

If you have running boards, it's not as big a deal. For those of us without them, a ladder is a necessity if you're lifting anything of weight up onto the rack. I've been using my rack in a limited capacity because it's hard to get heavy items up on the roof easily.

Like to know what you went with and why. Personally I will eventually get one but movable crossbars and a big deal for me with the different types of stuff I carry. Love those things though.

Have a Baja rack for my roof top tent, just got my new feet but installed with spacers on the old feet and had no issues. Great rack and nice build quality, delivered on time.

I've been trying to dig around to find this, but there are a lot of gobi vs. baja threads.

Can anyone tell me how much height each of these racks adds?
I thought I saw somewhere that the Bajarack standard long rack adds about 6 inches. I couldn't seem to find how much the Gobi Stealth.

The whole point of ordering one of these replacement roof racks for me, is to eliminate the extra height that a basket and cross bars adds. Its a pain in the ass to have to worry about the truck not being able to fit in parking garages.

Looks like just about 7.25" over the roof on my stealth. You can also order one with a "no rise" option that eliminates (the bar will just go straight across, level with the sides and back) this raised part in the front of the rack. Can only upload one picture from my phone for some reason, but I measured what it would be without the rise and it came in at about 5.5".

I have had both. Second time around With the 4Runner I ended up getting the Gobi.

Baja is cheaper to ship, guys where easy to work with. Not a bad rack.

Gobi was more to ship. Stronger overall, easy to work with.

My take delends on what you want and what you are gonna do with it and ehat you are willing to spend. There are ohers out there as well that are worth looking at. I got mine for a good price the Gobi with a free ladder, shipment and a tool box at a discount on a group buy. If you have specific questions ask.
