I'm a Moog distributor, I have the warranty papers in my hand, wish I had a scanner.
Anyways it's good that insurance is covering most of it- you should see if you can get the shop to cover the other 25% so you don't have to come out of pocket.

Huh, I searched for a while and couldn't find their warranty anywhere on the Moog website or the federal-mogul website.

He will still end up paying for it as I am sure his premiums will go up for this claim.

Thats because the average consumer doesn't deal with the warranty process. You give the part back to the parts store, they send it back to their warehouse and the warehouse applies for warranty credit.

Yeah, but the customer needs to understand what the warranty is. In this case, he had a Moog part fail very prematurely and has alot of damage to his vehicle. There is a good chance that the damage was done due to a defect or design problem with the Moog joint, so he needs to know the warranty info in case they actually wanted to stand behind their product. But if he hadn't had a Moog rep available, he wouldn't have a way to find that out without trying to exercise the return policy at the parts store, which would be the last choice in my mind.

No offense if you like Moog products, but this experience doesn't give me much confidence in their stuff. A company should at least spell out how their warranty's are handled.

That being said, I did just install Moog sway bar links in front as they were the only thing my parts shop had. At least they aren't safety critical.

My credit card now has a $1000 hole burned in it but at least my insurance covered a little over half of the cost and I have my 4runner back minus the bump stops which are on order on their dime; the dealer admitted that they were left off and should be there.

Any who, how is this for failure of the ball joint?

Ok, so stupid question, but the new OEM LBJ comes with the bolts and nuts right? Mine are riveted on, so I will have to cut them off.

And new castle nut?

It's the one with the bolts, not the one riveted to the control arm.

OEM ball joints are DEFINITELY not riveted on- there's not too many rivets on the general market that can hold a ball joint together.
It'll only come with the new nut for the joint, you reuse the bolts. No nuts for the bolts- they thread into the knuckle.

I had my new LBJ's finally put on yesterday. $195 for the install and the alignment. I brought my own parts to be sure I was getting the real deal at the local shop. I would rather do preventative maintenance than have my family harmed in the vehicle.

It's the one with the bolts, not the one riveted to the control arm.

Yeah, you're right, I was looking at the wrong spot.

I am trying to order new LBJ's and TRE's from toyota of dallas, but the inner TRE comes up as $120, so I suspect that is for both sides, but they havn't gotten back to me as to whether it is both sides, or $120 for each.

Heres everything the lowers come with. I ordered these and the uppers from Toyota a few weeks ago, just havent had time to install yet. They dont come with the bolts. Have to salvage them when removing the old joints. But you shouldnt have to cut anything.

Of course, you can order the bolts from Toyota seperately. I may do that just for peace of mind.

Ya the bolt on the bottom of my picture is part of the ball joint, and you can see the black part it is extending out of. Thats the rubber boot covering the actual ball joint.

Now here's my question. When I call toyota to order the do I just order lower and upper ball joints and everything that is needed will come with it or is there more too it? I know you use the old bolts so I assume it's just ordering the upper and lower joints.

They come with everything you need. Get your parts here, they are the cheapest.

You probably don't need to do the uppers as they don't see that much stress, and will probably cost a good bit in labor.
