Ball Joint Press Kit?

Pickle, or tuning forks tear the crap out of stuff. I prefer to use a pitman arm puller, set it up nice and tight, put a little heat and penetrating oil on it, then whap it once real good with cheater-beater, (short handled mini sledge) boom done.

Lower ball joints bolt in and out. All the ball joint kits really don't work on our uppers. I know cause tried and owned multiple kits. For the upper a large socket and 3 claw puller is best. I had to get a little creative, but this thing worked wonders for me. Everything came out much easier (and I felt safer, whatever that's worth) then when I used the ball joint press kit.

question...
is this to get the BJ out of the upper arm? or the spindle?
upper arm just needs a BFH (big fat hammer) and a couple wacks... falls right out
the lower bit IIRC needs pressed out, upper tools work great, but I also thought the ubj's had a retaining clip that you take out. IDK maybe that was another vehicle.

I think you may have this backwards. The LBJ will fall out with a couple wacks from a hammer, or with a pickle fork. The UBJ does need to be pressed out, or at least mine did.

Depending on the joint it can be hammered out. I have done this on a lot of 4runners now and I always use the BFH method first. But there have been times I needed to press it out.

BFH on the UBJ, guess I got lucky, it's my wifes 4runner with 195k miles on it. took quite a few wacks with a 5lb hammer but it came, if anything I did some 'gentle' messaging on the UCA for clearance in the future.
PB blast it absolutely... I did everyday for a week before whacking it.
Note: to get the BJ out of the arm, you DONT whack the nut and stud... you hit the arm as close to the stud and nut as you can. just like the LBJ.

I don't see how this one would work, it looks like it would brace the bottom of the LBJ and just press the top into itself instead of bracing the LCA and pushing the LBJ out. What am I missing?
I used a cheap pitman arm puller from Autozone. I was a little too big but it got the job done.

I think this also depends on the rust. For places that don't have a lot of rust things tend to come apart a lot easier.

I couldn't find a press kit that would work when I did mine, so I went with the 3 jaw puller method as well.
I cut the stud off with a grinder and used a 1-1/8" socket on it.

Yes my main use for this was when doing the Ball Joint for the UCA.
I recently put in the SPC UCAs and did not have a BJ press kit available and took a LONG time with an air hammer and grinder to get the BJs out.
So I was looking to get a kit for in the future.
