Bars On Front? How much cat smell is ok?

Just got this truck about 2 weeks ago and there are a couple of bars on the front of it. Any thoughts on what they were for? They seem to be attached to the frame on the front. I'm thinking it might have had a grill guard or something on it? Sorry little hard to see

Also, this 4Runner produces the nasty rotten egg type smell like many of them do I'm just not sure how bad is too bad. As in, when should I have to consider *gulp* replacing the cats or exhaust. The smell can get real bad at times but it's under heavy acceleration as described throughout the site.

I do plan on getting the exhaust turned to the side and I was thinking of asking if it could be done after the resonator. I'm not sure if there is enough room or not so any thoughts on that?

do u drive with the rear window open? either way, doing the bend after the resonator will not make any improvment, the reason some report less of a smell is cause the res. is cut off so the angled pipe can exit just after the mud flap, shooting the exhaust directly to the side & some times down a bit. those brackets may have been for aux lights or possibly a bullbar.

I don't think there's a lot room... I resisted the temptation to go with a large diameter pipe and can tell with all sincerity there's no difference in noise while driving. There's a tiny growl from a dead stop through 15mph but that's it. Even the fussiest person would never call it loud.

I might try to get the dealer to do a cat replacement under the TSB. I don't know that it would help much but it wouldn't hurt (if it bothers you that much).:cheers:

I have some. I quickly learned to go easy on the gas if I have it down too far. haha That makes sense though about where to cut it so I'll just get it lopped off.

I was thinking aux lights as well they are just a little odd. I should do some digging around the front to look for any wiring!

Unfortunately, no factory warranty so I wouldn't think I'd stand a chance of getting it done haha. Please, correct me if I'm wrong though!

This is probably more what I should have asked (noise). With knowing that then I think I'm set to cut the thing off and re route it. So with there being pretty much no difference then no probelmo. Thanks.

I would bet the Cat is not getting hot enough, could be your gas has a low heat value. I would get a tank of real gas, not that 10 to15% junk alcohol gas. Then go out on the highway and run it to get the Temp. up. This might get the unburned deposits fried away. Can't hurt to try.:AK47:

That's kind of funny cause I had a somehwat similar thought but I just switched between grades of gas... though I figured that would do virtually nothing. I think there is a place down the road with a sign that says "NO ETHANOL" I'll load up on that next.
