Batt drain on Dome Light Circuit on a 2K 4runner

I have a Battery drain on the Dome Light Circuit on my 2000 4 runner.


It will kill a brand new batt in about 2 weeks if the truck
is not started. I load tested the batt to make sure it is OK.

When I pull the Dome fuse the drain stops.

I realize the clock and radio are on that circuit and possibley the alarm. But it should not be draining that much power.


I do not have a wiring diagram and can not figure what is staying on to draw that much.

Anyone seen this or have any suggestions?

What all is on the dome circuit? Is there a light in the glovebox, perhaps? Maybe the switch isn't working, and it's on all the time, only you can't see it.
 
go to autozone.com and sign up and you should be able to take a look at the wiring diagram. I'm not sure what all is on that circuit off the top of my head.
 
I can not open the wiring diagrams at Auto Zone, Is it working for anyone else?

Okay, you're on the right track. You have identified the circuit that is causing excessive parasitic draw. Now you have to look at each component and its wiring to determine exactly what is causing the problem. Once you figure out the other things in the circuit, you can set your meter up to read amps and start checking component by component (or even wire by wire) until you discover the exact point of your problem. But first you have to get yourself some wiring diagrams to know where to start.
 
There are a couple of options if you can't find the actual drain. You could put a switch in the line just before the fuse. You could just disconnect the battery when you're not driving.

He said that he pulled the fuse already, which accomplishes the same thing as installing a switch or disconnecting the battery. That's not a fix, however, but rather more of a temporary band-aid type of solution.

Simple diagnostic work will lead him to the true source of the problem and allow him to fix it permanently. With a set of wiring schematics, the true problem will be found by anyone with a little electrical experience.
 
Hi guys, I have a pdf of the dome and radio circuit with the connectors. does anybody knows how I could put them here?
 
i found mine from the Toyota tech site as well.... if autozone isn't working PM one of us your email address, and i'll send it over.

If you read my post I stated "If you can't find the actual drain." In addition, I wouldn't want to remove a fuse and replace it every time I need the dome light...

I did read your post... and he hasn't been able to find the actual drain yet, so he's pulling the fuse. As for what he does in the future, like I already stated, your suggestions aren't a fix, they are just a temperary band-aid, which are similar to what he's already doing.

Besides, if you wouldn't want to remove & replace a fuse every time you needed the dome light, then I'm fairly certain you wouldn't be happy disconnecting the battery every time you needed the dome light either.
 
I noticed something yesterday that might be relevent. My '99 4Runner has a sticker inside the engine room fuse box telling the dealer to remove the sticker after installing the dome light fuse which was left off to avoid battery drain. My sticker just never got removed. Seems it is an expected problem?
 
New member, been working on a 2000 4Runner limited fixing all sort of gremlins. Anyhow I'm trying to help a friend out and having a heck of a time with a parasitic draw. I have narrowed it down to the dome circuit and even further than that I have narrowed it down to something with the diversity antenna. With the car off and in sleep mode I am getting 0.54 current draw. If I disconnect the diversity antenna (smaller antenna wire) from the back of the stock head unit and allow the ecu to go back into sleep mode the current draw drops to around 0.01 on the 10a scale on my meter. I know I'm on the right track but I can't for the life of me find a schematic on how the diversity antenna is wired or let alon find where that cable goes to or how it could possibly receiving power. Any help guys?
 
I have the same problem, my trouble shooting has been to check the draw on the battery and one at a time pulled every fuse and relay , with no luck. I currently make sure I start and run the vehicle once a week. (its a second vehicle) sometimes I unhook the battery if its going to sit longer

Your tail hatch wiring most likely causing the drain.. Or your drivers side door wiring. The wires insulation cracks and wires break from bending. Thus creating these shorts. So I verify those wires to if nothing else rule out as cause.. :)

I was having problems like yours and did a parasitic draw test. Which was within spec but my battery wouldn’t go a week. It ended up being the battery.

A 1/2 Amp current draw is excessive. And from the antenna circuit seems even stranger. Much more than the radios memory.
It will be interesting once the cause of the drain is found as a design flaw or a circuit that remains on all of the time.
