Battery maintenance?

Our second car is infrequently used these days, mainly it's just backup transportation for when my 4Runner is in the shop. Since it doesn't get driven often, keeping the battery charged is a problem. I'm looking into getting a trickle charger. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good charger, or what to avoid? Any other tips for using one?

Also is there anything else I need to consider in maintaining a vehicle that is infrequently driven?

The easiest option is to disconnect the positive cable and leave it in the car. Since you don't have drastic temperature fluctuations, you shouldn't worry about leaving it outside. I usually pull mine and leave it inside during the winter. If needed, I'll put it on a charger overnight before I reinstall it. There are modern "smart" chargers that manipulate the voltage and current throughout the charge cycle, I just use an oldie but goodie charger that has a 10amp and 2amp manual setting, I use the 10amp. If the battery is low, don't disconnect it when it gets above 13v, it needs to maintain that voltage for a while to completely charge. There are many write-ups about different types of batteries, some of which are serviceable, and how to maintain them for optimal longevity. Maintaining it so it starts the car isn't very difficult, at least just disconnect the cable because it sounds like you might have something drawing on it while it sits.

this is for a rolls royce and a lambo which is used only in the summer. so I had battery problems until I installed these into the engine compartment.

the product is not a typical type charger , but keeps the battery properly charged by using a computer that keeps the battery at the proper charge .also if the battery has a problem it will show by the light indicator. so far the batteries have not failed to start the cars as before.

this will not charge a battery if it down to below about 8-9 volts. the unit does keep a good battery that was charged charged. other products can damage the battery will constant over charging .

I disconnect the battery ground also so that the product is more accurate on the sensing of the battery condition.

I use a Battery Tender and have left them connected for months at a time. Think they also extend life of batteries - have one that is 7+ and one that is 8 years old and no problems yet. I use it on motorcycle, lawnmower etc. - I always leave battery fully hooked up and keep top of battery clean along with terminals.
