You have pinion bearings, and carrier bearings. Two different things. It takes a fair amount of experience to set up differential gears properly.

Some shops that would charge for the service, don't have competent Tech's that can set-up gears properly.

I would suggest that learning gear set-up on a differential that is in your daily driver, might lead to frustration.

As has been mentioned, replacing the entire 3rd member with one already set up properly, would be much easier for the inexperienced.

Ok that's what I'll do,but can you tell me what to look for so I know that the used one I buy is not worn out

couple of things to look for.

1.check that there are no broken teeth on the ring gear or pinion.
2.look for any weird wear patterns. in other words if you can tell major wear then that is weird.
3. spin the pinion and listen for any grinding sounds or binding. Should spin smooth.
4. move the pinion back and forth should be just a little play. Should sound like a tick when the gears hit not a deep clunck. I don't know any better way to describe this sorry.

this should get you a pretty good used 3rd. Good luck in your search.
